how do you guys/girls study?
just curious. i have lots of poker books. the only one i've finished it WLLH. over thanksgiving/christmas i'm not going to have a chance to play much poker since the best i'll be able to do is dialup, so i plan to read a few of the better ones. how do you go about making sure you get the most out of a read through? underline and write comments in the book? keep a notebook by your side for notes? think of hands were you could have applied concepts? just curious. thanks. cross-posted in pyschology btw.

I usually read for a half-hour or so before bed each night. Right now I'm reading Thomas Sowell's Basic Economics, but that's cuz I recently finished up a reread of SSH. I also keep books in all the bathrooms.
I think most poker books are so dense that reading one cover-to-cover in a day isn't very effective. I read a part at a time, and think about it for the next day. Sometimes I'll stop reading for a whole week while I try to integrate an especially complex or epiphanimicating new concept into my existing understanding. Writing and highlighting in a book is one way of reinforcing concepts in your mind. It's a psychological trick, in that the mechanical action of going back over the words forces you to remember what it said. Trying to explain a concept to another person is also a great way to reinforce material, since the level of understanding needed to convince someone else is greater than recalling or recognizing a concept yourself. I try to educate my poker-noob friends all the time. It usually doesn't work--but just like this email itself--explaining helps it stick in my mind.

I pretty much read them like novels. If I have a lot of time I'll read it fast, and if I only have a few minutes I'll read a page or two. If I feel like I need more work on one book in particular I'll start at the beginning as soon as I've finished it. If I've absorbed a lot I might take a few days off and make the boards my only poker reading.
I agree wholeheartedly that explaining concepts to other people from the most basic to the most complex is one of the best ways to learn. For me at least, I absorb just about any subject better by teaching than I do by studying.

i used to read on the throne, but i found myself in their for long periods of time cuz i was really into what i was reading...now i have hellmuths new book in the bathroom, its good cuz its mostly just stories of interesting hands, nice and short...

Lately I've been reading a chapter or 2 of TOP everytime i'm in there. The last few months I've done that with TOP, SSHE, and INside Poker mind. I think its a perfect place to reread various interesting parts of poker books you've already read.
