Default Tell me why I shouldn\'t buy this TV

I saw this deal on gotapex today:

42" Widescreen LCD Plasma

Please tell me why I should not buy this at Tiger Direct for $2299 + $125 shipping. I don't wanna spend this money, but it seems too good to pass up. Maybe I suck at looking for deals, but I've never seen an HDTV Plasma Flat Panel this cheap.

The only real concern I have is LCD vs something like DLP rear projection. Am I giving something up with LCD?

Because it's plasma and not LCD.

Plasma has a limited life, LCD doesn't (or at least not like plasma)

Get an LCD.

Oh, I see. When I looked at the description, it said LCD/Plasma, but actually that was the category (LCDs and Plasmas). i guess I will do a deeper search on Plasma lives. Is this the only problem with Plasma?

Heat output and power consumption are considerably higher than LCD.

Not to mention the fact that you would have to buy it from Tigerdirect. Do a quick search on fatwallet for tigerdirect and read peoples' opinions.

You can get a 55inch LCD projection for that price. If you are tight on space, the plasmas are nice. If you have plenty of room the LCD projection is a superior technology.

Because plasma sucks.

I got a 50" Samsumg DLP for slightly more.

Please, please, please. Before you buy a plasma, go read up on them and other technologies at www.avsforum.com before you drop so much cash on one.

Someone link this guy to a gigantic, sleek looking, flat panel tv that has a price he can't pass up.

His future roommate's entertainment depends on it.

also if you wait 6 months to 1 year youll be able do get a high def lcd at half the price they are going for now. the one ive had my eye on was 10k last year. its 5k now. when it gets down to 2k ill buy it. and im not going to pay that for a plasma with a 5-7 year life span.

Actually from what I've read at avsforum in the past, the plasma lifetime issue is greatly exaggerated. Most manufacturers give a "halflife" (when brightness is half of the original brightness at full brightness) of 10+ years. That's not when it will die, just when it will be less bright, which is about on par with CRT TV's.

From my preliminary research, LCDs are still a lot more expensive then plasmas relative to the size, and in my personal opinion I don't really like the quality of the DLP picture nearly as much. I think the plasma is a viable option, I am definitely considering one heavily for myself.
