why pay a BB just to see another player's cards?

Live $4-$8 game last night. I bet the river with my middle pair ace kicker and got called by a guy who held a Jack high. He said "I just have to see your cards." I took down a decent pot, plus $8 that no one in their right mind would have contributed.

I'll take the 8 bucks, but why would someone do this?
