Hands that need to see a showdown

I see a lot of threads where people talk about hands that need to see a showdown. These are usually good but not great hands like tpgk, trips with bad kicker...etc. Could someone elaborate on this for me? Is this just another way of saying that you should keep the pot small for these hands?
