To Mr. Ray Zee stud 8 or better
While playing stud 8 or better, in a loose game with players who call with razz hands or even k-2-3 unsuited, would you suggest to limp with all good starting lows, or raise sometimes for a little deception?
I know in your book it states that not raising can give away too much info with your similar hands compared to your opponents, but I think I want those guys calling to see 5th and 6th street, what do you think?? Intice them in? Thanks, schmidts31 |

Re: To Mr. Ray Zee stud 8 or better
the main reason a person raises is to fight for or protect the antes. it is important to raise for other reasons as well. such as setting up the hand to play with the hands and amount of players you want to be in with you. also getting more money in with the bewt hand. make them pay for drawing to beat you. you paid antes for that hand dont just let them in too cheaply. if they all are going out everytime you raise the game is too tight to play in or your persona is bad. then you need to raise more as stealing the antes becomes profitable. good luck.

Re: To Mr. Ray Zee stud 8 or better
Deception becomes a lot less important against bad players, so I'll tend towards raising a fair amount on third street for value.
I think the main reason I raise in this game is that raising is fun. |

"I think the main reason I raise in this game is that raising is fun."
This is one of the Fundamental Theorems of stud/8. Don't forget an important corollary to this Fundamental Theorem: Raising the limpers and bring-in in stud/8 annoys the other players. The raise causes them to reduce attention to live cards, position, and pot size, while increasing thought bandwidth to "boy that *%*#hole in seat 1 is such a jerk". This corollary is particularly strong in B&M games where players have to physically dig for more chips. As to the original question, raising on third street when your opponents play razz hands and K,2,3 unsuited, well, it depends on your position and how these guys handle raises. I don't see K,2,3 unsuited very often, but I play against split nines, medium str8s, razz hands, dead flush draws etc. at Party. These guys sometimes fold to a raise in early position, but they never fold once they've limped in with their stellar cards. Raising in late position with 3,4,5 or A,2,5 is a good play, but I hate to chase out the medium str8 draws with a raise in early position. BTW, razz hands are playable against bad players who start with split nines, draws to an 8, etc., especially if the only third street raises are from rolled up hands. Many hands are playable against bad players if you can start out cheap and have the discipline to dump them when they don't quickly improve. |
