GMail is Google's web-based e-mail application, like Yahoo Mail or Microsoft's Hotmail, but since it's a Google product it's really, really good. You get a free gigabyte of storage, etc.

Anyway, it's in a "public beta" where the only way you can sign up for an account is to be invited by someone who already has an account, hence the requests for invitations.
