Default Straight rankings

I have been to several casinos, and can't get a clear consensus on the ranking of straights!!

Highest straight: TJQKA (obvious)
Second highest: (A2345) or (9TJQK)?

I was in Vegas (forget what I was playing - Paigow poker i think), and lost a hand to the dealer (i had 23456, dealer had A2345).

In Niagara, and twice at the table A2345 lost to either 23456, or 34567.

Can someone please clear up this confusion?

As it is in poker, I'm only familiar w/ an A-5 straight being the lowest ranked. K-9 would be the second best straight.

I haven't heard of any instance of the A-5 straight being higher. Was it possible that the pai gow game had a rule making it higher. Also, was it possible you mis read the board?

You are talking about 2 different games.

Typical Poker (Stud/Hold'em/etc):

AKQJT - Highest
A2345 - Lowest

PaiGow Poker:

AKQJT - Highest
A2345 - 2nd Highest
23456 - Lowest

This is consistent everywhere I've seen these games played.

Of course, if you're playing Gin Rummy, TJQKA only counts as a run of 4 (Ace can only count low), but I don't think I'm advancing the conversation here.

Ha ha... and in "Big Two" or "Choi-Die-Dee"

Big Straight is 2AKQJ, 2nd biggest is 23456, and smallest is 34567.

RMJ - Thanks.

You are correct - I am mixing two games, but can you explain why straight rankings would differ in Paigow Poker, and regular poker?

Thanks

I believe the ranking of A2345 as 2nd highest in Pai Gow Poker is arbitrary... but I'm not positive, since there's a joker in play in that game.
