Putting Slansky\'s ideas to work
In Why are Easy games Hard? by David Sklansky , Mr. Slansky says to "play more longshot draws if you are drawing to the nuts or near it."
Does this mean loosening pre flop (say from 18-20% VP$IP to 25). Or Does it mean chucking some marginal high card hands Say A To or J Qo and playing more suited connectors? Does it just mean that if you call with your normal hands and have a longshot draw to the nuts, you should be more willing to play it? Or am I just not getting it at all? -Saint_D |

Re: Putting Slansky\'s ideas to work
I think what he is saying is that pots in low limit games are multiway more often and bigger, giving you better odds to play longshots. Because there are more players in the hand, the hand that wins will be closer to the nuts more often and playing lower suited connectors and other such hands that can make the nuts is more correct.

Re: Putting Slansky\'s ideas to work
Playing small suited connectors from anyplace other than a check from the big blind means reducing my pre-flop standards. Is this what he has in mind? |

Re: Putting Slansky\'s ideas to work
that can be part of ti .. but it is really more of a post-flop comment --
for example: instead of dropping two overcards because the flop missed you -- if you have an inside straight draw and a backdoor flush possibility ... stay in for the turn if you can do so reasonably cheap. At least, that's how I read it. |

Re: Putting Slansky\'s ideas to work
Check out Ed Miller's Small Stakes Holdem (SSHE) book.
I'm sure it will help you "crush the game". It sure turned on a lot of lights in my head. |

Cruising at about +2bb/100 in .5/1. Is that "crushing"? Question: Should I be playing suited connectors below 98s in any position but a limped to BB? |

Re: Putting Slansky\'s ideas to work
I have this article in one of the books I own (getting the best of it) by Sklansky, but it is written slightly differently. Towards the very end of the article in the book he is talking about starting hands and says:
"Ace-Jack is garbage in hold 'em. On the other side of the coin you yourself can loosen up on some hands --- those that can win the highly probable big pot if you hit. Any ace suited is a good hand in a whild hold 'em game as is any pair in your hand" So of course he means chuck those marginal high cards. |
