Default Hansesn\'s call with his T8d? Whats going on?

Was watching the Bad Boys of Poker on the WPT tonite.

Antonio raises with 77.
Hansen re-raises with T 8 d to 100K

Antonio re-reraises all in with 2nd high stack.
Hanses says he can't fold his ten high and calls.

Catches an 8 on the flop?

WTF?

Last night in my world famous shitty ass home game.

Im BB with AQ, and a straddle of 10 to my left. Button calls I rasie all in to $50, both call.

turn was 10 6 3 3 5

straddler flips over 2 3.

He called $40 with 2 3o.
Button said AQ had him killed, whats going on with poker?

Alert! Alert! Alert!

The post you just read is not an observation of the bad boys of poker WPT event. It is a very poorly disguised bad beat story. Original poster - please cease and desist immediately.

10 8s is about even money to 77.

If your the chip leader at the final table, you have 10 8s.

The 2nd chip leader goes all-in, you know he has an under pair, do you call?

maybe you do.. if you're gus hansen. this is basically a freeroll for a $25,000 seat. gus plays HIGH LIMIT poker where if he loses just a few bets, it could amount to $25,000. maybe he was just gambling.

for some reason this concept always seems hard for people to grasp. like phil ivey betting on golf.

I think it's all about Gus' read on the other guy. He figured the other guy for a medium to low pair. The question he was probably asking was not whether his 10 was an overcard to the pair, but whether his 8 was an overcard to the pair. If so, as someone else said, it's nearly a coin flip.

You could tell: He asked "Am I going to fold my ten high?" and all the ABC players laughed. But, he wasn't kidding.

If he called that 77 with an AQs, no one would have batted an eye. But, correct me if I'm wrong, T8 is actually a better hand against 77 than AQ, because it has more straight potential.

It didn't matter how much higher his cards were. What mattered was that they were at all higher. Beat is beat.

Still, taking the short side of a coin flip, even if he did know exactly where he was (and I think he did), that's still pretty gutsy.

That is precisely what he said.

I doubt many would argue that the call was absolutely amazing AND insane all at once.

Don't get me wrong, as I posted in another thread, Gus is one of my favorite poker players and I certainly wish I could play as well as he does AND have the reads he has on people.

I'm sure many would likewise love to play like him.

However, given that his opponent could have all sorts of hands -- he had to know he was a huge dog to just about anything.

Or he heard The Song.

As far as the element of this thread talking about the stakes he plays for, that is absolutely correct, the money in this event is entirely meaningless to him. When you play at certain levels it's just for playing for the sake of playing. I played in my grandmother's poker game again when I visited her yesterday and lost 10 big bets in an hour -- but they play 5-cent 10-cent, so I lost a dollar. I was trying to play well, but random stuff happened and I certainly was there mostly to visit grandma. But the dollar is meaningless.

Likewise, $25,000 is meaningless to Gus.

I didn't see the hand, but if he had pot odds to make the call vs. two overcards (remember, that's only about a 2:1 dog) then he made the correct call.

Good gracious, it would almost make one think there's luck involved in the game after reading your post!
