Default Women at the tables

This weekend I'm heading to Vegas with my wife. We play online together a fair amount and she is no slouch. She knows how to figure rough pot odds, and reads strength/weakness fairly well. She's worried about playing in a B & M room for the first time. I'm telling her not to worry because most guys assume women can't play well, and she is at a huge advantage. Am I off base? What assumptions to guys have about women players?

If I see a woman who acts confidently and quickly, then I ignore her gender. Otherwise, I assume she doesn't play well until I see signs to the contrary.

BTW - if your wife is attractive, she can really play that to her advantage if she's at all outgoing. Look how much attention Erin Ness got from her WSOP appearance, and she was only cute.

I'm telling her to be flirty, and to say all the things that guys look for in a weak player. "Boy, I just keep getting lucky cards!" and "Where is that cocktail server? I need another martini!"

Tell her to concentrate on her game and not worry about anything else.

I don't think the "women don't play well" statement is accurate anymore. Judge the women by the same standards you would judge an unknown male player. Based on my B&M experience, the percentage of decent women players within the total population of women players exceeds the same metric for the guys - ie there are more guy fish as a % of the guy player population than their female couterpart.

what these guys say are true of smart players, but i think the average joe at the poker table will think women are inferior poker players for sure. it's all about male ego to a lot of people, that has not changed that much... especially in poker. your wife should just play well, and she'll see she probably gets paid off more then a guy would in the same situation.

good luck

Biggest mistake (in terms of BB's lost) I've ever seen at a casino was made by a woman...

During my last trip to Foxwoods, a woman at my 2/4 table went to the felt (about 20 bets, $80) on the river on an AAKKx board versus a slightly better than average player. He flips up an A. She has a King. She takes a break.

Funny thing. I think the guy with the ace played it worse. He got lucky.

If I were him and my opponent went to war like that I'd assume either she has an ace too and we split or that she has pocket kings and i'm beat. There's almost no way I'd go to the felt against someone in this case since it looks like I'm beat or tied.

Perhaps he had some kind of read and/or knew she was a bad player, but she'd look like a genius if she flipped up KK.

Regards,

T

Last night at Foxwoods 4-8:

After flopping top set of kings and taking much raising and reraising on the turn and river with nothing but rags falling. My opponent turns over the cards and proclaims "Straight". Knowing there was no straight or flush possible for the board. I look at my opponent and politely say "Impossible - I have the nuts".

He relooks at his cards and realizes the error. Stupidity is not gender specific.

I find that in general women are viewed as inferior players that can be pushed around, but if she shows down just one or two good hands she'll immediately be given too much respect and dealt with as if she's a rock.
