Install XP SP2 manually-
It worked for me but do it at your own risk:
Download SP2 from here http://tinyurl.com/5bobl Tips: 1) It is a 260MB file so if you don't have broadband you may want to get a CD 2) Do not worry about the multi-installation warning in the web page. It has more stuff that you need but only installs what is needed 3) The whole process took like 2 hours including download 4) Be sure your Antivirus and Firewall software is uptodate before you install SP2 5) SP2 detects your firewall (at least Norton) and Antivirus . It automatically sets the Windows firewall off 6) I will recommend that you downlaod the software to your PC and then run the installation 7) Do A FULL Backup before installation 8) MS will release a manual installation soon if you don't want to do this. 9) Check your most important software web pages for any updates or incompatability with SP2 before installation Similar topic Protect your PC: Disable System Restore Perform an online virus scan. Download, update, and run these tools: Spybot Search & Destroy Lavasoft Adaware CWShredder Repeat as necessary until clean. To protect against reinfection, download and use these: Javacool's SpywareBlaster Javacool's SpywareGuard Malware-blocking HOSTS file Optionally Reenable System Restore If you still experience problems after doing these steps, download HijackThis and post a log to this forum Good luck JAque |

Re: Install XP SP2 manually-
I installed and the uninstalled SP 2. My issue was with my monitors, it caused my second monitor to not function properly. When I installed the second monitor I had a problem with it scrolling and I dont' rember what I did to solve it, so for rightnow I uninstalled SP 2 and it put everythign back how it was.

hi randy, i seem to remember you being one of our techno posters. i'm curious what you are going to do now? are you going to try to find a fix for the monitor and resinstall the SP? i still have not installed this, and am trying to decide when/if |

Re: Install XP SP2 manually-
I think you have me confused with someone else. I actually think the problem I was having was a problem with my video card, when I installed the second monitor I had this same problem and figured out how to fix it. This morning I didn't really feel like figuring it out again so I just uninstalled it. I don't think a patch is needed I just need to remember what I did to get it to work the first time. I have the dowload sitting here nad might experiment with it on my wife's computer; I do have to say the uninstall worked just fine and put everything back how it was as if I had never installed. I have a router and a software firewall so I feel protected without the security enhancements. I am looking forward to seeing this upgrade in action.

Re: Install XP SP2 manually-
Hi Granny:
I think your question is when and not IF. Eventually you need to catch up with your operating system updates or you will run into issues. My original caution was because there was a lot of talk in the press about problems after installation. I researched my applications and I saw no warning or troubles inidicated in their web pages. therefore I decided to install it. Remember you can remove it and also if you have a full back or better a "true image" of your hardrive, you can always go back. I still recommend people researching the main applications web pages for any sign of trouble. Good luck JAque |

Re: Install XP SP2 manually-
hi jaque,
i think i missed my window of opportunity to get the auto-download. i remember when the last security patch was released, and i was able to go to the MS site and it read my version and prompted me on what i needed to do. is this the time to get it direct from MS, or should i still give it a few days? i am definately going to do it, just am confused as to whether to wait or not. ty |
