Default Too aggressive?

Did I totally overplay this hand? Should I not have capped the river here? I checked the river hoping to induce a bluff and represent that I just had jacks. My read on the guy was that he was reasonably good, and I figured he would take a shot at the bluff if I showed weakness.

The river looks fine to me. Why didn't you bet the flop?

I might have been getting a little too fancy, but my read was that the players in late position were aggressive enought to bet, and I think my table image was reasonably tight so that people would figure I had two overcards after the early position raise, and the flop had not hit me. Thus the aggressive players would bet the semi-ragged flop.

I think the river play is fine. I expect the ace made him smaller two pair. I wouldn't even be surprised if you chopped.

I probably lead the flop though.

I don't think you were too aggressive.

The tone of your post tells me you lost; so he had a set?

It happens.

I've been running into a lot of sets the last couple of days.

I would definately cap this river everytime, only a set or an unlikely 3-7 straight is going to beat you. You say that he is a good player, so he wouldn't call two cold with 45, so you can rule out the straight, and if he had Aces then he would have 3 bet preflop. The only possible hand that beats you is a set of 7's or 6's, if he has that then oh well he missed some bets earlier by slowplaying. I'll cap this, hopefully he has AQ and is overplaying it on the river.

I was hoping that the Ace made him a smaller two pair, but it didn't, and I lost the pot. I was kind of shocked to see what he had, and how he had played the hand.

Damn guy DID have pocket rockets! He didn't raise any freakin' round until the river. I would note that I was behind from the get-go so in retrospect, I guess I should be happy that it wasn't really a bad beat situation.

That's too bad that you lost, but I like the river play. The flop play is ok since you ended up protecting your hand, it was the right move.

I'm wondering what he has now that would surprise you, jacks?
