I'd raise the flop and cap the turn. You could be up against KK or AA, but that's how the cookie crumbles. Getting more money in the pot seems like its to your advantage in hands like this in the long run.

although you lost you was lucky you didnt have to pay another big bet, the guy should have bet, dont think he was trying for the check raise, he clearly thought you had that 5

I agree... I would have raised the flop and maybe capped the turn. But after that I would probably slow down. So I am pretty sure I would have put the brakes on for the river like you did - but I might have bet to see if villain still liked their hand. AA KK, AK, AQ and AJ are all possibilities. You have all of them beat except AA and KK. JMO from a newbie.
