Default Interesting Final Table chop

No Limit Hold em tourney had a 30-dollar buy in, 70 people. I made the final table, shortstacked. However I stole some blinds, knocked some people out, and I was in good shape with 4 left. We each had around 192k in chips with blinds being 8/16.
The prize structure was this
1. $510
2. $360
3. $250
4. $170

Everyone wanted to chop, so that would get me $320. However I felt I could easily outplay these people

1. Old Lady who's only move was to go all in on a big pocket pair.
2. Another lady who constantly moved in to steal the blinds.
3. A man who refused to play any hands, after knocking 4 people when he hit his set.

For some odd reason this casino carries a rule, that when its down to 3 people, the game automatically stops, and prizes are awarded. So with 3 people to go, whoever has the most chips wins the top prize.

So I refused to chop, thinking I could just steal the blinds, or possibly knock the all-in lady out, and get the top prize.

Next hand, the-only-way-to-steal-the-blinds-is-to-go-all-in lady goes goes all in. The old lady called with Queens. She lost to K7. And suddenly it was down to 3, and the game was stopped.

So this lady got $510, and it turned out that another player had 2 chips more than me, he got 2nd for $360, and I got 3rd for $250.

So I could have gained another $70 had I chopped. What would you do in this situation?

First, I think you should play at a different casino without such idiotic rules such as not finishing a tournament.

Secondly, I'd have probably done the deal in this situation, strictly because you'd probably be forced to double to win the top prize - knocking someone else out of the tournament. You're so close that anyone else knocking someone else out (which wound up happening to you) - puts you in the crap bottom slot. Whereas chopping gets you basically 2nd place money with no risk.

You can't WIN the tournament by outplaying people because of that idiotic rule so that's why I'd have done the deal.

That's just my opinion, but I could be wrong.

Regards,

Bong

Whatta screwed up structure. Out of curiosity, what happened to the other $800 in the prize pool? Seems like too much to have been awarded to lower spots...

6-10 got 70 dollars each. So I guess casino rakes in $450 out of the $1640 prize pool, which is a rip off.

Yeah, that's kind of where I was going with that. I'd try to avoid this tournament unless you just enjoy playing it for the fun of it; I have a hard time imagining there is any money to be won here long term...

I mainly go there for ring games. At first I didn't even understand what was going to happen when it got down to 3. The tourney took only 3 hours, I found it to be profitable.

Well *this* time you did, and you will probably get into the money more than the average player there, but to overcome a 25% rake is difficult, perhaps nigh impossible.

Didnt all tournaments used to end that way? I mean stopping at some point x? and then awarding the money based on chips? And it was changed to make it more exciting later?

It would be better to analyze if you gave us stack sizes.

I never heard of stopping a tournament a like that. As for chopping I don't know many players who ever are happy with what happens whether they chop or not unless they end up winning, of course.

Got to take your money and move on.
