Default Friend\'s Party Poker account got hacked, what to do?

Hey guys,

My friend calls me today with a pretty remarkable story. He plays on PP sometimes, nothing crazy, 2/4 a couple times a week. He hasnt played in the past few, because he was moving, but he logged in yesterday and noticed that his 700 dollar account was reduced to 20. He checked transactions and noticed that 2 cashouts were made to e-passport account. He looks there and sees that the money is still on it's way, but sees two new names added to the e-passport. Now, I use Neteller and not sure how e-passport works, but apparently someone hacked into both? Anyway he was able to finally, after 30 minutes he says, to convince Party to cancel the transaction. He then went ahead and changed everything he could possibly change to alter his identity.

I asked him whether or not he has been logging in from different places, but he has been only doing so from his apartment.

Now my question to you guys. What can he do, to at least seek some kind of compensation and an explanation of what happened. Had he logged in 3 days later, that money would have been gone and probably not recovered. I know Party does a great job of keeping track of people's IPs, can they not tell him which IP logged in and then reverse look up? This is all a bit troubling and I can't believe he of all people had this happen to, because he was always so skeptical and worried about the net and it's security holes. Anyway, I told him to call Party right now and request more information, but any assistance from any of you would be helpful.

Ty.

scary stuff.

i wonder if someone was able to 'read every key-stroke' with one of those programs like i have read about before.

if true, this should serve as a wake-up call for all of us.

i think granny has previously stated that serious players should be checking their online-casino, neteller and bank accounts on a daily basis.
more and more i am agreeing with this.

changing your passwords on a semi-regular basis might not be such a bad idea either. i am admittedly rather lazy about this.....but perhaps not for long.
stories of identity-theft run amok (not just online-casino per-se....but everywhere).

Does he have any sort of firewall or anything? After reading the thread on here a couple days ago about viruses and stuff, I figured I would finally get off my ass and install a firewall and an anti virus prog (ive got a perm net connect). I've had it active now for only like 4 days and I've been amazed by how many port scans and what not have been attempted on my computer. I imagine it wouldnt be to difficult for someone to gain access to a computer that had no protection and install a keylogger or hack your party account. I would definately start routinely changing passwords and try and get party to give you the IP numbers and stuff. Its a very serious criminal offence what took place and the police would glady track the responsible party down.

He doesnt have a firewall, but he was sharing an internet account with his roommates via a router. I believe a router acts as a firewall to a certain extent, but most likely he is still in danger.

I tried to convince him to get Party to divulge the IP information, he is somewhat calm about all of this - but I am a little outraged and think the police should get involved. I won't even mention that there are 2 full names in his e-passport account that can probably be used against them if they are not fake.

It also seems Neteller is a much safer way to go about things than e-passport, because even if they get into the Netller account its very difficult to get the money out.

can the US authorities really get involved in a situation like this?
any evidence that party provides would be coming from outside the US.

i don't really know much about the law....but i find it unlikely that they could be tracked down or that much could or would be done about it even if you could find these guys.

Trust me, you don't want the police to get involved.

This would definately be something the police would get involved in. Identity theft is a serious issue. I almost got arrested awhile back because the morons at cox cable didn't switch over the name on the account when I moved into my apartment, and since you have to use a SSN# to get an account with cox (which is the stupidest f'cking thing ive heard of) when the chick who used to live here got billed for my cox activity the police showed up at my place because they thought I stole her social security number

Cox Cable is on US soil.

party and neteller are not.
i don't know a thing about e-passport.

don't forget that the legality of online-poker itself is still in something of a grey area.

there are some states where you DEFINATELY don't want the authorities to get involved.
they wouldn't care about the identity theft.....they might care more about the 'illegal' online gambling.

i believe that what you are propsing is similar to those who want to 'sue' an off-shore internet-site when they don't pay up (many have suggested suing pokerspot for example).

ahem...excuse me....you CAN'T sue an off-shore poker-site!!
they aren't regulated by any US agency.
this is part of the risk associated with internet-poker.
they can run away with your money whenever they choose and there's nothing you could do about it.
