I read in Amarillio Slim's book that you would make money if you always bet on the underdog.

The public tends, in general, to underestimate the dog and overestimate the favorite. There's a lot to be said about this and the APs therein. But to claim, as Amarillo Slim does, that always betting the dog will make you a winner is a very dangerous, if not unsound, proposition.
(Maybe that last word explains what Slim was on about.) |

Re: John Kerry: 7/4 odds to win
To complete your thought you would have preferred a U.S. victory. I agree with your sentiment. When I bet on a particular outcome that I don't want to happen I always state I hope I'm dead wrong but ...
BTW I think I'd take Kerry at those odds. Even though many of his supporters have given up, I think the election could easily swing in his favor. Kerry's strategy now seems to be to convince enough people that only a total incompetant boob would have put the U.S. in the position that they're in as far as Iraq is concerned. Kerry's already got at least 40% of the electorate convinced of that. Trashing Allawi was a horrid move by the Democrats. The undecideds want to at least have the hope that Kerry will deliver on his promises of a diplomatic solution (we can argue if that's what Kerry's really saying) but I dare say that the Kerry and Democratic party actions regarding Allawi would dash those hopes for at least a few. |
