Naw I think the NPA would agree with her laydown. What is his saying again, "Always Fear the Flush".

"I Don't ask and I don't tell"

I have noticed that there is a convention in some cardrooms, and/or tables to give a "courtesy show", and have even caught myself doing so almost without thinking on a few occasions. But, i see no reason to be impolite if one chooses to not show. After all, I find I enjoy the ambiance of a pleasantly interactive table when its available. (I've even learned a thing or two from some sidebar conversations....

And then, still feeling somewhat stunned about what I thought I had just seen, I asked "Did you just muck a straight?"

[/ QUOTE ]
Is that what you really said? Or was it more like "Did you just muck a straight!!?" I think in your surprise you may have conveyed your real feelings in your voice. You know exactly what you saw and you think she's nuts.

Which could explain her reaction given that she was obviously already suffering folder's remorse.

Next time either say "I make it a policy never to show my hand, but you made a nice fold." or smirk and say "Gotcha!" I would go for the first one but I'm still a bridge player at heart. The second one is for those in the crowd that enjoy tilting their opponents.

In this instance, I would have said, "I had a medium diamond and lucked out on the river."

She feels good about folding, you feel good she folded, and you know you can get her to fold again in the future when a scare card hits.

And since she flashed her cards to you, she feels like you did the polite thing and reciprocated.

It's good to keep the other players happy IMHO. Especially if they are contributing to your chip stack.

I just shrugged my shoulders and smiled weakly.

[/ QUOTE ]

Take away the weak smile and this is my standard response when someone asks about my hand. I prefer giving as close to zero information as possible.

But given how this played out, I would like to have the presence of mind to say something like, "Wow, that's an amazing laydown." I always prefer to keep the atmosphere more to the jovial side than adversarial.

I always tell them what I know will make them feel better about the bad play they just made against me. In this case, I would have of course admitted to having the flush, true or not.
