schilling will get lucky and have line drives hit right at people... it all works out in the end.

[/ QUOTE ]

It hasn't even come close to working out this year for Schilling. He's been one of the unluckiest pitchers in the majors.

[/ QUOTE ]

mmhhhhmmmm. sure.

i actually have no idea, i have only seen schilling pitch once... the comeback where arod hit the HR.

[/ QUOTE ]

Schilling has the league's worst xFIP - ERA for pitcher's with at least 40 IPs. His ERA is 6.43 and his xFIP is 3.60. His BABIP of .383 (around .300 is normal) is 3rd worst in the majors behind Kevin Brown and Todd Coffey.

xFIP is ERA based on K-rate, BB-rate, and GB/FB ratio.

BABIP is the batting average on balls in play.

how are either of those more than "ok" indicators of quality pitching? i can see how pitchers who give up more seeing eye grounders or bloops would have a high BABIP, but what if a pitcher with a high BABIP just gave up a lot of hard hits which are harder to field?

as for xfip, why should i think a pitcher is better than his ERA says if he strikes out a lot of people, walks very few, and has a good fb/gb ratio? assuming we're not talking about an insignificant sample.

Because pitchers that give up a lot of hard hits don't get a significant sample to prove themselves.

A stat like xFIP is a better indicator of future ERA than actual ERA.

whats a good site for explanations/ discussion of sabermetrics, baseball prospectus or something? im sure someone has gone through, compared a bunch of pitchers' xfip over x innings to his era over his next x innings, etc, obviously i cant just ask you to show research on all my skeptical questions.

[censored] Schilling, he is a douche bag. He sold his soul for a ring in Boston, and I hope he dies soon.
