showing a fake in a casino is what i like to call a really, really bad idea. going in without an id and quietly leaving when you get carded does nothing to detract from the experiences of others.

This is retarded. What makes a 17 year old inherently less deserving of the right to play poker for money than an 18 or 21 year old?

I am 19 and I spent the better part of the last month at casinos playing poker (illegally ). I don't see why you would view that any differently from someone 2 years older than me doing the same thing. Don't say "because its illegal." If you're not going to think for yourself and provide some logic behind your conclusion than I'd rather you say nothing.

A reply using the word "retarded" is about what I expected. I'll let a few more boys try to flame me and then I'll reply.

id try the ballys. the poker room isnt attached to the rest of the casino area, it is up by the sportsbook. Furthermore, it is a dump and I find it hard to believe they are carding anyone up there.
I used to sneak into AC casinos underage back in the day and remember being asked for ID at the taj when you walk down the steps into the casino.

Are you implying that somehow his use of extremely common diction (which happens to be offensive to some) is connected to his being underage?

Greywolf, you're totally in the wrong here. The 'gambling at 21' law is a farce, dragged along with the fallacious concept of somehow being more responsible to drink at 21 than 18 (and backed unconstitutionally by highway funding, to boot).

Beyond this, Evan is a consistent quality contributor on here, so it's not like he's somehow trolling by using the word 'retarded' - which, by the way, is a value-neutral term.

I think you're way off the mark with your views here. With a 17 year old, you might have had a leg to stand on, since the person is legally a minor. With a 19 year old, you're completely in the dark.

Also, the fact that you won't see any difference from 17 to 19 may clue you in to how silly it is to see a difference between 19 and 21. If the kid wants to sneak in, have at it champ.

This is a subject I know something about. I started gambling in Las Vegas when I was 20. I used to stay at the Marina when Frank "Lefty" Rosenthal ran it. That place is now on the grounds of the MGM Grand. I also used to walk across the street to the Tropicana and gamble there. I played mostly blackjack, fooled around on slot machines once in a while, and liked the roulette wheel too. I never got hurt badly enough to really screw up my life, but I did back away from it for a number of years.
When I was older and making a better living, I would occasionally make a bet at OTB or play blackjack in a casino. I found thatI could gamble now without being stupid enough to put the rent money on the table.
I'm not here to tell you my life story. But I want you to understand that I am not someone who hasn't been there. I am not a prosyletizer, a puritan or a Republican. But if you are 17, 18, 19 years old, you don't have the emotional maturity to gamble, even if its poker. You are not held to the same standards of accountability that an adult is. This is even recognized in the law. For example, a minor may not be a party to a contract. And in New York state, a 17 or 18 year old who commits a crime may be afforded "youthful offender" status. There are very sound public policy reasons for these laws, and they were written by far more intelligent people than me.
At 19, you do not have the earning capablity to absorb the losses that you will, at some point, incur. (And please don't tell me that you do because you're "killing" the Party x/xx game.)
You have not as of yet accomplished anything besides doing well (I assume) in school. And thats fine, that's all that's expected of you for now. Even Barry Greenstein has said that he will not teach his son to play poker until he has graduated and gone out and accomplished something.
Evan, this is not meant to be a personal attack on you, but you did fire a shot across the bow and I have to answer. I looked at your own personal data and saw this:
"we go to like the 2 most expensive schools in the country and you have a midterm and i have a paper due, and youre sitting here trying to convince me to play .5/1 headsup so you have something to do"
You're a student at NYU business school and yet you have the time to spend most of last month playing, illegally, in casinos? You have the time to post well over 3000 times on this forum? If so, something is drastically wrong.
For all of you who are still in your teens I'll say this. Finish your education. Go out and work. Serve in the military. And when you've done that you will have earned the right to sit at my poker table. And I'll be glad to see you there.

So I have to defend a country that a president I didn't even vote for has continually screwed up over the past 4 years, and will almost assuredly screw up even more over the next 4 years, just to sit at YOUR poker table? This is definitely for the politics forum, and I apologize for the minor hijack here, but this is a nutty, nutty comment.

So many people want to tell so many other people here and other various anonymous places on the internet how to run their lives, and it's disgusting. If anyone ever listened to this drivel I'd have to question their purpose in life to begin with.

Go have fun in a casino, go drink beer, go try and rent a car, go do whatever underage people aren't supposed to do - that's part of being young. ENJOY IT!
