I havent read Sklansky's post...but IQ has a ton to do with the ability to think. Especially with recognizing patterns(perhaps the single most important skill in poker) which is a fixture in almost all classical IQ testing methods I know of.

Maybe I shouldn't have said, "[IQ]...has little to do with Mr. Sklansky's post."
The actual Sklansky quote is: [ QUOTE ] Also I don't consider the "ability to think" exactly the same as IQ. [/ QUOTE ] So, it's a little different from the way I put it, but you get the point. Firstly my "ability to think" criteria would be highly correlated with the ability to get a Phd in Physics if it was critical to do so. I believe only about five percent of the population is capable of this. All on my list could do that easily and two acually have. There are five Phds altogether. Plus two honor students at MIT and Caltech. There is the former world champion in scrabble. There is a man who ALWAYS got right the difficult game theory type questions I posed to him. Finally there is a guy who wanted to bet money that he would outscore me on the combined results of a few different types of standarized multiple choice IQ correlated tests. (That meant he was either incredibly smart or incredibly stupid and I'm guessing its the former.)
So it isn't easy to displace them in my mind. Among the names that would have a chance are Adam Bloch, El Diablo, Bill Bertram, Abdul Jalib, Gus Hansen, Dan Hansen, Patri Friedman, David Kopp, Huck Seed, Dan Harrington, Louie Landale, Jimmy Jimmy and two longshot possibilities of James Woods and Ben Affleck. I'm sure I have forgotten some obvious ones. Also I'm not considering those who don't really play much such as Brian Alspach, Paul Pudaite, and Jerrod A. |

I think estimating that 5% of the population is capable of getting a PhD in Physics is too high.

Uh..David my dad has a degree in Physics...no offence to him or you but I think fully 20% of the population could easily get a bachelors at an avg university in Physics provided they applied themselves. The human mind has an amazing capacity to learn.
HEY and I know you come from a Science/Math background but discount us Arts people...1510 SAT here (perfect verbal)...152 wechler IQ. Anyone who can score over a 700 on an LSAT, which is heavy on logic, probably is just as smart as most Physics majors even at Caltech or MIT...just my 2 cents as someone who got a 710 without prepping lol |

When I took it last year the highest possible score was 180. You must be really smart. |

Zaxx - please reread David's post. He was referring to a PhD, not a Bachelors. They are very different beasts.

please zaxx. sometimes i think you intentionally post incorrect info just to get people going!
if you think 20% of the population could get even a BS in physics you are crazy. also note that david was talking about a phd. |
