Forcing yourself to play 100k hand at each limit, even if you're soundly beating that limit seems like a fantastic way to stunt your growth.

[/ QUOTE ]

I disagree. It may cost me money a little bit of money in the short term but it won't stunt my growth.

If your talking in terms of $$ then yes it will stunt my growth, If your talking about skill level then no it won't.

What will stunt my growth is 12 tabling the 2-4 games on autopilot which is what I did before.

Besides 100K hands for me is about about 7 weeks of 4 tabling.

Can anyone do the math?

[/ QUOTE ]

The results of the math depend on the model you use, and the most commonly used model is deeply flawed.

No matter what model you used, the answer will be, "maybe it's variance, but maybe not".

I would win back the 256 BB and then some, and then move up. Set a $ target instead of a rate target as if you were building a bankroll. As long as you hit the $ target with an acceptable rate...

100K hands * 2BB/100 = 2000 BB = $20000, so I would move up after your winnings are $20,000. If your woes continue on the way up to $20,000, you'll know to wait.

if you can beat 5/10 you can beat 10/20.

[/ QUOTE ]
Sadly, this has not been my experience.

5/10:

10/20:

I am continually fascinated and frustrated by this.

I guess my point (to the OP) is a lot of people who were 1.5BB/100 winners at 5/10 have gone on to 10/20 and been successful. Others who were 2.5BB+/100 at 5/10 have not done well at 10/20. There's a ton of variance in poker, and winrates are never accurate. You shouldn't use win rate as your only guide when deciding to move up.

I don't think this is true either. how many hands have you played at 10/20? It's dangerous to bandy around stuff without a significant sample size.

not enough.

basically i didn't write that well. i meant that a player with a win rate of OP's should be able to beat 10/20. that's just the vibe i get from playing a few thousand hands. maybe i've been lucky to have great table selection (and only 2 tabling) but i seem to find many, many bad players.

it somewhat frustrates me the way people obsess over these winrates in limit poker. that stheif post that was referenced is a great example. the luck factor in these games is extreme.

Holy crap. You never had a real downswing over 100k - that's insane.

sigh let me explain

i'm not trying to say that 1.2bb is the best winrate, or that if you can beat 5/10 sh for 1.2bb/100 then you should move up to 10/20.

the best sh limit player i know didn't start to become a great player until he moved up to 10/20 and played 1-2 tables and worked on his leaks.

these posts saying 'o i dont want to muove up until i'm at 2bb/100' are pointless. there are plenty of players who move up with winrates below 1bb/100 and do well.

The real question you need to ask yourself is
a)how much tougher is the next level, comparitivly.
b)do you feel that at the next level the money would become an issue.

If you have a healthy bankroll and feel that you can beat 10/20 for a reasonable rate, you should move up. Even if your winrate is only 3/4 of it was at 5/10, you still are making more $. Skill in poker is maximizing your winnigs over the long haul. Is staying in 5/10 when your BR is ready HURTING you, i.e. you could be making much more in 10/20? If so you should move up. If you feel that the jump is too great and your winrate would be less than half what it is now, you should stay. However, if this downswing has damaged your confidence in your playing ability, you should wait until you have your legs under you again. Moving up levels is always a challenge, and you should do research into it and weigh the pros and cons.
