Hitting a dear going fast will most likely keel you.

No actually it won't. Deer are nothing to any kind of car. They make a terrible smacking sound and the cracked windshield, busted sheet metal and deer crap down the side of our car really sucks but its still much better than breathing through a tube the rest of your life.

Same thing with cows. More damage to your car but still safer than swerving.

2 animals that you should try to avoid though are Elk and Moose. They stand so high that you normally take their legs out from under them and they slam through your windshield.

Also pigs are probably the worst thing to hit. THey roll under the car and people end up flipping a lot.

I'm pretty certain you'd be better of trying to avoid hitting a deer rather than running it over. Unless of course you drive a canyonero...

Generally speaking, the first, best choice, is foot off the gas, ease on the brakes (don't panic stop, that's what causes 360's) and steer straight ahead.

Of course there are variables. At night, speeding, 2-lanes, ditches on either side of me, I'm hitting the deer. Attempting to miss at high speed I'm probably in the ditch. Upside down. Bleeding a lot.

Same night, interstate, not crowded, speeding (again), I'm headed for the shoulder or, if there is one, the median.

I'll stop now. There are too many possibilities. The final decision always depends on the situation/circumstances. That's why it's not a bad idea to think about things like this. Occasionally.

Good post. If you do have to hit the deer, I remember from class that you should brake as much as you can, then gas it when you're within a few feet of it so that you won't get impaled in the driver's seat. It's probably to do with wanting to have momentum going forward on impact.

I know its against your instincts but usually its better to just run over what ever it was than try and avoid. I have seen way to many serious accidents from people trying to avoid hitting deer, dogs, boxes, etc; especially in traffic.

Been there, done that. Outstanding advice.

Not even close... I've sent deer airborne spinning head to tail before, on multiple occasions. One time it didn't even dent the car, noticeably.

Just outside Badlands Nat'l Park (in South Dakota, for those that don't know), a friend was driving me and another friend. We'd spent the day in the park, and were going back to our house in Wall, and it was full dark by this time. We were doing maybe 70-80.

I was in the passenger seat, and hardly had enough time to register the cow in the road, much less react. The cow was black, the night was black, and I have no idea how it got out of the fenced areas. Luckily, the driver was a bit quicker than I was and slammed on the brakes and swerved. We did a couple 360s before coming to a stop, and how we managed to avoid rolling I'll never know.

Easily one of the most frightening experiences in my life.

Bah! Back in my day we all did 360's and we were grateful for them.

Glad to hear you are ok.

You should burn off that adrenaline I think it is important for your health to do so. Sex or exercise you pick. Either one will make you even more happy to be alive!

This was on the highway, and I was going something like 75 mph in a 65 mph zone. I saw the guy directly in front of me (100 feet ahead) swerve and barely miss the thing, then I saw it and reacted the same way. I'm pretty sure I had read somewhere not to brake and instead just release the throttle, and I'm surprised that I remembered that in the nano-second I had to react. Unfortunately, I still lost control and just kept my foot on the brake until I came to a stop (pretty sure this was the wrong move though).

When I get back to school I'm definitely taking some emergency driving classes.

Oh, and I said it looked like a picket fence in itself upright position and was worried it might mess up my car's undercarriage if I decided to run over it.
