if you bet the river and get called, what hands do you beat?
What hands is he going to fold that beat you? If he has not folded A or 9 yet, he ain't folding.
I think checking the river is fine.

A 7, a lower pocket pair. I'm checking behind too FWIW.

Well, I think there are enough responses for me to post some results. In white below:

There aren't many lower pocket pairs left that has not made trips by the river. And only an idiot would call down a pre-flop raiser with 7s with an A on the board.

Personally, I don't like it even though you won.

1. On a loose table I would limp pre-flop.

2. With 4 opponents, I'd estimate the probability that someone had an A at 75% (maybe even higher considering this is a loose table and lots of people play A rag). Remember, anyone that see the flop is not playing a random hand and many playable hands have an A in them. I'd estimate the probability that someone had A or 9 at close to 85%.

I'd check the flop and see "if and where" a bet comes from.

If it comes from one of the early players, I'd fold.

If it comes from the last player, I might raise to clean everyone else out and see what happens from there.

If it gets checked through, I bet the turn if it's a safe card. If not, I'd fold. I don't see a pair of 8s as a particularly good hand here.
