At Casino Arizona, there is a great 6-12 stud-8 game with a bunch of live ones, and pots that are bigger than the 15-30 stud-hi game. Most evenings there are 2 full tables.

Ft. McDowell also has a good 6-12 stud-8 game, but it is sporadic and you never know when they are going to get it up. Also at FM, there was a 3-6 stud-8 game with NO ANTE and a $2 bring-in instead of the usual $1. That game lasted for months without becoming totally full of rocks (like me!)

Caveat: I moved away a year and a half ago, so things may have changed.

i would have to agree... i have a lot of problems making the right play in stud whereas in stud/8 it is often obvious to me what i should do (whether i actually do what i should do is another matter)

having said that, i think someone with only hold'em experience will do better at stud than stud/8 initially...

272 entrants in the $500 7/8 event in Tunica. At Bellagio I played several 7/8 sat's w/David Williams. It was the first time he'd played 7/8 and he was commenting on how much he liked it; change of pace, totally different from HE, more decisions and action than NLHE, etc. He was encouraging other young guns like John Murphy(no relation) to play.

7/8 will always be around as part of mixed live games, and I think it has an outside shot of catching up to O8 in tourney popularity. It's an action game; well at least it ~seems~ to be an action game...

I should point out that 6 months ago, I couldn't find anyone interested in a stud 8 home game. Last week I found 3 people who are interested. Maybe in another year we'll have enough people to get an actual game going.

I have noticed an increased number of 7stud/8 posts. I hope this means that it is gaining popularity. I love this game. Where does everyone play?

Nope, just the opposite, the game has been pushed aside to make room for additional
HoldEm tables. I've been playing this game for about 15 years and most of the venues
have disappeared. My local room used to spread multiple tables of 4/8 and 6/12 stud/8
on weekend nights, but those games are completely dead, they won't even start a list.

The only 2 Vegas games that I know of are limited to 1 or 2 nights a week. The Orleans
used to spread 5/10 stud/8, but I haven't been there for 5 years, probably long gone.

I am curious if the games are still spread in California. I used to travel to San Jose on
business, and both Garden City and Bay 101 had loose 4/8 stud/8 with big pots. Will probably never enter those places again, but does anyone know if they discontinued stud/8?

Maybe the game goes on the east coast or in other regions I'll never see, but in Vegas and the midwest there's not much interest.

Online games don't seem to be growing, but at least they're not shrinking at Party. Small compared to the zillion HE games going, but a fair number of low stakes stud/8 tables.

The number of games at Paradise has dropped substantially the last 5 years, but so have all the games at Paradise. Same thing at Planet Poker, they had many tables going
during the late 90's, but it's pretty dead now. The only game going at Planet is $0.50/$1.0. Delta Poker had a great 2/8 spread limit game, but that died out in 2000. I cashed out of there in October 2000, are they even in business now?

in the last few months, i've been to vegas, reno and canterbury park and found no stud/8 action... palace station in vegas apparently runs a 3/6 game on fridays but it had broken up the one friday i tried to play there... canterbury has that ridiculous 30/60 game that andy b plays in but those are way beyond my means...

closer to home, trump's in east chicago runs a 2-10 spread limit game on saturdays during the day (they used to run it during the week but now they prefer to run about 80 gazillion tables of 3/6 hold'em)

I can't possibly be the best stud player on this site. Ray comes to mind, and I imagine his co-authors can play a bit. I'm guessing snakehead is a stronger stud player than I am. Aren't you the one playing $75/150?

There are indeed many times in stud/8 when the pot will be jammed, and it is very important that you be the wring-or and not the wring-ee. Sometimes it's tough to toss a good hand or a good draw, but you can't get married to hands and expect to survive.

There's a difference between being a good player and being a good poster. I do a lot better when I have a half-hour or maybe a couple of days to think about something than I do when I have to make my decisions in a few seconds.

As for stud/8 being the limit game where the good player has the greatest advantage, you'll get no argument from me.

I've always done well at the Palace Station, will probably play there next Friday. The regulars haven't figured out how tight one should play a 25 cent ante 3/6 game. Also, as much as I dislike jackpots, at least a badly beaten low gets a payout. It stinks to pay a stud jackpot tax in stud/8 where most players dump pairs on 3rd street, making quad qualifiers near impossible. They used to play the game 9 handed, which was kind of nice because the game sucks short-handed and people always seem to walk for some reason. Also, I don't remember the rake, but it's something reasonable like $2.50 or $3.00.

The Palms spreads $10, $20 on the river stud/8 twice a week, at least they used to.

The stud/8 games at Canterbury were very good back in 2000 or 2001, whenever it was they opened. The games had an interesting mix a reasonable players and poor players with very deep wallets. The deep wallet guys could drop $300/$400 in a 4/8 game, then come back next week to dump some more. Must be nice to have that kind of money to p*** away. If the place was overcrowded, which was often, then good high only stud players would often sit down because the wait lists were too long for 4/8 and 6/12 stud. Some of these guys were excellent stud players, but steady losers at stud/8. The Hold Em craze has pushed out these type of games, but I suspect the big contributors have either found cheaper vices or are attending Gamblers Anonymous meetings.

I played it in December. It was a pretty good game, not as good as Canterbury's $30/60 game, but worthwhile.

Of course, I've played some $1/2 on Stars lately, and that isn't as good as the Canterbury $30/60 game.
