any suggestions as to what games would usually be the best for someone accustomed to small-stakes online play (2/4)? i'm willing to jump up in limits about as high as 6/12, though i'd probably be more comfortable at 4/8 just considering the money at stake.

The 6/12 is a great game. I was there on Monday during the day and we had guys who:

<ul type="square">[*] limp-reraised with most of his suited hands; [*]called down once with Q-high and overcalled on a AAxxx board with K-high; [*]3bet the flop with his gutshot;[*]raised preflop with any A.
For a while most hands were 5+ to the flop, and this is at a 9-handed table with a friend of mine who plays about as tight as I do.

also, anyone know how that 4/8 o/8 game is?

[/ QUOTE ]

I've never played it, but here's what I've heard.

The dealers say it's the worst Omaha game in the world. According to those "in the know", when the room first opened, some guy came in and won a lot but taught everyone to play, so they all got better and beat him, and now it's a terrible game, filled with players who are all good. Right...

You have to got to the West Coast to find a better card room. The best low stakes games in the house are 4/8 or 8/16. The 4/8 can get wild ($150+ pots) at the right table. 6/12 for some reason can play too tight.

They don't have a jackpot for anything higher than 8/16, which may be a good thing. The holdem bad beats range between $50 to $100K, because the qualifiers are Aces full of tens, with both cards playing.

The boards sometimes aren't as bad as they look as everyone posts on 3-4 boards. Usually you can get on a stud table right away while waiting for holdem.

The room in back has casino games, sometime they run promotions which can make the payouts a slightly positve EV. They can only make money on the rake $.50, so they give back the gambling profits and adjust the payouts and run promotions accordingly. The rake makes it a bad place to gamble unless you bet $25 a hand to reduce the rake to 2%. So beware.

You need to get there by 5pm during the week, on the weekends by 11 am. Even then you may have a short (1/2 hour wait.)

There is a suite hotel nearby with a poker rate of between $30-$40, ask a floorman. That rate assumes nothing big is going on at Canterbury or in the area.

The food service is ok, nothing special, stick with the basics as that is all they prepare well. Their soups from the grill tend to be pretty good. They also have buffets at least on Thurs-Sat nights which can be good, expecially their prime rib. There is a full service bar which close at 2am.

Up the road 4 miles is Mystic Lake, a great hotel and casino. No poker room, but discounted accomadations and a great buffet. There is no liquor at Mystic Lake, but a good place to think about staying if you can get a deal.
Have fun

Damn it. Thats the complete opposite of how the 6/12 was playing when I was last there. Preflop raise usually meant two to the flop. I guess that game must have its good times and bad times.

I haven't played that game in two years, might not even go much given that HoldEm has taken over the tables. However, 2 years ago, it was an awful game. A tight split pot isn't very exciting.

One of the regulars played so few hands that he would bring a public library novel with and briefly glance at his cards before mucking them, then return to the novel. And he was the best guy to have at the table, as the others were just as tight but complained about everything.

As others have said, worse game in the house, don't bother.

The part about the guy educating all of the Omaha players and subsequently going broke is absolutely true. There aren't any great players in the game, to be sure, but it's tight enough that it usually isn't even remotely worthwhile. It may well be the worst game in the country.

Sometimes he reads non-fiction just to mix things up. I like playing hold'em with him on my left because I get the button two hands in a row. No one in that room is as tight as he is.

I actually enjoy a tight stud/8 game, but the limit has to be high enough that the rake is manageable. Say $30/60.

is the 30/60 worth making a weekend trip?

one other minor question, how early does it start, when does it stop?

You're talking hold'em, right? It goes almost every day, always on Friday and Saturday, usually starting in the afternoon and going until the wee hours. Sometimes it goes all the way through the night. It's almost always worthwhile.

Hoping your hold'em game is stronger than what I've seen of your stud game....

I like the public library aspect to his hobby. A fellow should work at keeping his recreational costs down.

BTW, actually made it out to Canterbury in December, first time since March. Had to wait 4 hours to get a stud seat. Spent the time playing 4/8 HoldEm, ugh.
