His pre-flop call can't seriously be questioned.

It is true that Hero will be folding 88 percent of the time (i.e., every scenario in which he doesn't hit a set, this one notwithstanding). However, in the worst case scenario where the SB caps it behind him, Hero is risking 3 bets against a pot of 25 bets. The pot is thus laying Hero better than 8:to:1, which justifies a call even without taking into consideration Hero's position and the incredible implied odds for those cases when he does hit. Also, note that in cases where the SB doesn't cap (as was the case here), Hero is risking 2 bets against a pot of 19, which means that the pot is laying him odds of 9.5:to:1.
