This is a dumb question but I am not a hold em player...whats a straddle?
It's posting another blind double the size of the BB in first position. If it's a live straddle (club dependent) he then gets last action rights preflop, postflop the hand plays as normal. In several areas they don't allow live straddles and thus the straddle is just treated as a raise blind. |

[/ QUOTE ] Having fun is a fine reason. I play craps because it is fun, even if it is -EV. Straddling is a way to introduce some extra chance into your game, as a change of pace for yourself. It may make you more alert for that reason, like a cup of coffee. Mixing metaphors, if that isn't your cup of tea, there are strategic reasons to straddle. 1) It can change your table image to that of a loose, lively player. 2) It can change the attitude of the whole table and make for a looser game. |

the real answer, which I am surprised no one has given, is that it gives you last action preflop. a straddle is treated as a blind, so everyone acts, and then you get to act last after everyone else.
if everyone just limps around you are morally obligated to raise. in limit games it's just sort of a way to waste money, but it's very common in NL/PL games because it stimulates action at the table and the blinds are generally very small relative to the bet size. so you're not giving up a whole lot by putting a $20 straddle out there when you have a 2k stack. plus no one knows what you have, etc. in places where NL has been going on a long time consistently (i.e. the bay area) they play with 3 blinds sometimes, like 10-10-20. lots of old school people like ray consider this the best structure for NL. straddling essentially serves to replicate this structure with 2 blinds. --turnipmonster |

In limit, it is probably a stupid bet but it can loosen the game up considerably. I play low limits so the games are often loose but you get a few people posting live straddles and the game can get wild.

a good player can make a lot of money of someone who likes to straddle, since they must do so in the dark without knowlege of their cards beforehand. Straddling = GAMBOOLING, and to the majority of our opponents poker is just a game of chance. Often times a straddler will play very aggressivly as if he or she hit the flop with a made hand. Its a psychological move, and surprisingly it works well sometimes, but in the long run it is not reccomended.
