The music company, artist, etc will lose money with each mp3 I download.

You and Typical Tom would probably buy the same number of CDs, and spend the same amount of money. He downloads 5 songs, you download a million (a low estimate, I know). They lose more from him per download than you.

1. It's either unethical or it's not.

[/ QUOTE ]

Being either blind to grey areas or unwilling to admit that they exist is evil.

Hey Satan, did you see spaceman is back?

[/ QUOTE ]

Since I responded in that thread, I think it's a safe assumption that yes, I did see that.

But personally I have no problem with using batting tokens like this.

[/ QUOTE ]

Sooga, imagine this scenario.

The tokens at the batting cage sit in a box behind the counter by the cash register. A big box with thousands of tokens. You pay $10 and the guy reaches in and gives you 4 tokens. You are the only customer inside and you know there are no cameras. You ask to purchase something else and the guy says he has to go to the back stockroom to get it, so he heads back there. He leaves and you are now able to grab a handful of tokens with absolutely no chance of getting caught or anyone ever finding out. Would you help yourself to a bunch of tokens?

Hmm, good question, and I'm sure you and most people here would assume I would take them. I absolutely would not take them. Taking tokens out of the register (whether I get caught or not) is blatantly theft, whereas what I am doing with the ebay tokens is a more subtle version. This is why while I don't agree that I'm a sociopath, I would be more likely to be convicted on charges of embezzlement or fraud than something like burglary or grand theft.

No, I did not think you would take them. I thought you would do exactly what you did, which was rationalize a way to make yourself feel better about doing something that is in all reality exactly the same thing. I think you should face that fact that you are as much a thief as the guy who performs the "blatant theft" described above. Whether you care about that or not, that is your own deal. But you are unquestionably as much a thief as the guy who steals them from the register.

I'm not rationalizing anything. I understand they are both theft, but the non-blatant theft is simply something that I can live with. If that makes me a sociopath, I guess I am.

Nah, you'd enlist a confederate, and pay him $20 to grab 46 of them for you.
