Default Harrah\'s New Orleans Poker Room

For Labor Day weekend I will be heading to Biloxi for a couple of days, and I am considering staying in NO for a night or two to play poker there.

How are the games usually?

I will be playing 10-20, maybe some 15-30 depending on the game and the 5-5 NL game.

I would love any info.anybody who has played in these games might have.

BTW Do they have a poker rate?

Thanks a lot,

I was there in May. I played no higher than 6/12 but it was comparable to 1/2 on the net. They had 1 or 2 10/20 and or 15/30 games going at any time. Don't expect any comps.

I was in NO in June for a convention but managed to squeeze in a couple of poker sessions.
Here is what I remember:

Haven't heard of ANY kind of poker comps. Only thing I noticed was that there seemed to be some decent deals on nearby rooms throught the casino. Most other places that are close seemed pretty expensive.

VERY NOISY casino and poker room! No REALLY NOISY! Not just a little noisy. Not just slot noise, but loud people and even marching jazz bands doing "parades" around the casino including right by the poker room.

Didn't see any higher limit games. Highest limit I saw was 6-12 with the exception of a No Limit game they had going a couple of times.

I played at Harrah's about a month ago on a weekend. I only played 10/20 - they always had at least one 10/20 game going after around 2 pm. They don't spread any limits higher than that.

The games were very soft, with many locals. Mostly loose-passive, with a few tight-passives thrown in.

The one downside is that the rake is very high: 10 percent up to $4, with another $1 taken out for a bad beat jackpot.

And yes, the room is loud.

I'm in NOLA now. I played 3-6 hold'em there last night. In with $50 and out with $54, for a $4 gain. Best night of playing I have had in a while, because I was proud of myself for getting the hell out of there! The game was super loose/agressive. I mean a pair of 6's won a hand with the second 6 falling on the River! I tightened up, and went agressive and as soon as I went positive on cash, and one hand before the big blind was supposed to get to me, I got up and left. Yahoo!

I don't know about nowadays, but a couple of years back when I used to play there, (2001-2003) the first thing you notice is that New Orleanians LOVE to gamble. The big game was usually Limit 15-30 Omaha Hi (last card charlie), which is an insane game, where most of the players would routinely see the flop for multiple bets. There were hardly ever hold'em games (only half and half tables where they would have an orbit of hold'em and an orbit of omaha hi). The only times that people would ever voluntarily play hold'em was when either a) there were lots of out of towners due to a convention, or b) the bad beat jackpot got insanely high. And even then, the biggest game they would want to play was 3-6, and only for the jackpot. (though during convention-time, they would spread a 6-12, and rarely a 10-20) From what people have been posting, it looks like they play more hold'em now, but I think that the people probably haven't changed, in that they still love to gamble.

The stud games back then were very soft, and they probably still are, populated with mostly old folks, but not the kind (of old folks) who are good at poker at all.

Also, back then (I don't know about now), there were no amenities for poker players they didn't even accept Harrah's cards in the poker room to give you a rating. They definitely didn't have a poker rate back then. Don't know about now though. Also around 2003, they moved the poker room to probably the noisiest part of the casino. The room used to located all the way in the back in a nice nook, and it was a lot quieter, but now, it's noisy as hell. I apologize that most of the info is outdated, but hope some of it helped...

They spread 10-20 games more or less on demand, usually at night, so if you're there earlier you may have to content yourself with the 6-12 rodeo until they fill a 10-20 or no limit table. Like the city itself, Harrah's New Orleans takes all kinds, so depending on table assignment you're liable to be with 9 rocks or a small cabal of maniacs who routinely straddle bet.

If there's a louder, darker cardroom in the country, I haven't been there yet.

Another note: Labor Day weekend is when they have what's called "Southern Decadence" in the French Quarter, a large gay festival with plenty of drinking. How much of that party will bleed into the cardroom, I can't honestly say. In any case, drunks, straight and gay, get more than their fair share of seats on weekend nights.

I've played in Tunica, Biloxi, and now New Orleans and I can honestly say they treat the poker players much, much better in both Tunica and Biloxi.

Game selection, as far as limits, will be better in Tunica and Biloxi as well. But, depending on your preference, if you like a lot of action New Orleans seems to be the place to be. They just love to see a lot of flops.

Of course, I've only been to New Orleans the one time, and it was during a tournament, but it was very crowded and very loud in the poker room. The poker room sort of spills onto the casino floor which causes it to be so loud.

I didn't enjoy myself too much, but I lost too, so I may be biased in my opinion.

Actually some time ago, they bumped the max rake up to $5, plus the $1 BB drop.

But the games have always been pretty good with very few folks, even in the 15/30 having much of a clue. They will usually have a 10/20 or 15/30 game going. It usually starts as a 10/20, but then a few folks ask the table if they want to play higher and many times they agree.

I'm in NOLA now and on Mon nite, the 10/20 game had broken and they started another 6/12 table. Within an hour we changed the game to a 10/20.

I hated Harras NO cause it was too damn loud. The poker "area" (not a room) is next to a very noisy slot area. Seriously, there is very little table conversation cause ya just can't hear anything. I'm never going back.
