what exactly do you want to know? do you mean complete beginner; i.e. how to place a bet, etc..? or do you mean strategies and ideas?

Re: newbie guide to sports betting
i too like sports betting but have no real strategy. the only games i bet on are hockey and baseball because those are really the only ones i know a fair bit about. i look at the odds, decide who i think is gonna win and if it's laying good odds i take it.
is there a deeper strategy involved? sometimes i do 3 or 4 team parlays. say i do a 3 team parlay and 2 of my teams have already won and the 3rd game hasn't started sometimes i'll bet a little bit on the opposite of what i have for that game in the parlay so either way i'll at least break even. is this a good strategy? |

Re: newbie guide to sports betting
one of the deeper strategies would be to not bet 3 or 4 team parlays. also, it is debated all the time on whether you should hedge your bets, like in the example you give below. my own opinion would be if you have the money, don't hedge for the sake of hedging. but, if something has happened and you don't think the price is worth it anymore, then you can always bet the other side. but, the bet on the other side is because it has merit on its own. a good example would be a series bet during the playoffs. lets say that NYY and BOS are playing each other to see who goes to the world series. And the odds are:
NYY -350 BOS +320 We will say that you take BOS +320, and after 2 games boston is up 2-0 on the series. So, you look at the odds now, and see that they are: NYY +450 BOS -400 Well, you can def. take NYY +450 and make a "guaranteed" profit. But, I would not, unless I thought that NYY +450 had merit on its own; i.e. basically pretending I had not bet on BOS already. But, this is just my two cents. craig |

Re: newbie guide to sports betting
when i said "deeper" i was referring to a comment the previous poster had made. baseball is probably the only sport where it might be worth making 3-4 team parlays, because you can basically do it with no vig (but even then, do you really want to bet all those longshots). but, in football and basketball it is a huge ripoff. The true odds on a 3 team parlay is 7:1, they pay you 6:1. And from there on out it gets much worse. Two teams can be profitable, but one has to make sure their parlays are correlated.
