Default Good sample size for PokerTracker?

I just got Pokertracker a few days ago and have about 2k hands in it so far. My question is, when does the data start to reflect my long-run play? When should I notice that certain hands are losers for me, and certain hands are winners. I obviously don't have enough data right now, as QQ and AJs are my biggest winners.

When should I start to adjust my play? 10k hands? 20k?

Well start adjusting your play to fix any obvious leaks immediately.

But a good statistical sample would have to be at 25k hands (and this is stretching it). In my first 5k hands I was 8BB/100 which is unsustainable and you are only at 2k.

There are many good threads about this as well, I recommend searching to find more detailed posts than mine.

Good luck and keep playing.

kpux,

There are certain things you can start looking at right away. VPiP%, PFR%, etc. are stats you can start benefitting from after just a few thousand hands. Other stats take much longer to get any meaningful information. Starting hand stats will probably start showing trends around 15-20k. You should be able to see which hands are making money for you, but keep in mind that suited hands will still have a small sample size at this point. To be confident about winrate you will need even more hands. If you are winning at a decent rate after 50k hands it's probly a decent indication you are a winning player. >100k and you can be fairly sure.

I just passed 100,000 hands and I notice some individual hands are still a little out of whack.

Default Tread carefully...

I wouldn't even think about adjusting my play based on individual starting hand stats unless I could quantify the significance of the win rate for each hand. As far as I know, PT doesn't do this for you so you'd have to calculate hand-by-hand SD manually.

I would imagine it would take upwards of 100K total hands before you're even close to a meaningful number.

Thanks for the advice guys. I've been on Party for a long time now, about a year, and I'm consistently beating the 2/4 game, and 3/6 when I'm feeling ballsy. I'm pretty certain I'm a winning player, I just want to fix all the kinks in my game.

I'm a little confused by some of the abbreviations...PFR% I'm guessing is pre flop raising %? But what is VPiP%?

Thanks again.

And is there somewhere where I can find out what all the abbreviations mean?

VPIP=Voluntarily put money in the pot. If you put your mouse over the category in pokertracker, it'll tell you what it is in the bottom left corner.
