Flopped a set of Ks against 6 Players, comments please
.25/.5 On Golden Palace
Preflop: Hero is Button with Kd, Kc. UTG calls, UTG+1 calls, MP1 calls, MP2 folds, CO calls, Hero raises, SB calls, BB calls, UTG calls, UTG+1 calls, MP1 calls, CO calls Flop: (14.00 SB) Ks, Jc, 4h (7 players) SB bets, BB calls, UTG calls, UTG+1 calls, MP1 calls, CO calls, Hero calls (want to get bet into on turn for the raise) Turn: (10.5 BB) 9d (7 players) SB checks, BB checks, UTG checks, UTG+1 checks, MP1 checks, CO checks, Hero bets, SB calls, BB folds, UTG folds, UTG+1 calls, MP1 folds, CO calls River: (14.5 BB) 9h (4 players) SB checks, UTG+1 checks, CO bets, Hero raises, SB folds, UTG+1 folds, CO calls Final Pot: 18.5 BB How did I play that? I felt that a slowplay was ok to maximize my value in the hand on the flop and I hoped to raise the turn if the SB bet out. I saw the strait on the flop, but wanted to risk it in this huge pot. I was gonna just call the river, but I felt the other two were too tight to call the bet by the CO Thoughts? |

I was so tempted to raise the flop, but I figured I could go for a turn raise which would net better results and is more +ev than a flop raise

I would've raised the flop, you had perfect position to trap everyone for one more, and they are likely to call it.

Ya, I couldnt decide if that would be good, but I guess its better to protect my hand than to try to over sandbag it

since you had no real reason to fear a flush, why not a checkraise on the turn ?

I was hoping for SB or someone to bet the turn so I could raise and really build the pot, but I think protecting your hand is more important than building a pot in this case |

I was so tempted to raise the flop, but I figured I could go for a turn raise which would net better results and is more +ev than a flop raise [/ QUOTE ] The thing is, several things have to go right for you to get more money in the pot by waiting till the turn to raise. Someone in a good position who will not bet into you on the turn if you raise the flop has to bet into you again, the other hapless folks have to be willing to call turn bets, etc. People bet and call on the flop all the freaking time but fold on the turn; they also protect against your obvious free-card flop raise, heh heh heh, by betting into you again on the turn even when you raise the flop, or they 3-bet and cap the flop with draws themselves (but surely won't throw in lots of bets on the turn), etc. Let them give you their money. On the flop you have multiple people trapped between you and the bettor on a board with two broadway cards. Raise it up. This isn't really about "protecting your hand," btw -- a flop raise is protecting it from absolutely no one, because there's like zero chance someone who's already called bets is going to fold when you raise it up. It's about getting in lots of money from lots of people when you have gobs and gobs of pot equity on a board where people will give you action. just my 2c. cheers, mn |
