Played Lucky Chances' $1/2 no limit game this past friday. After several hours at this game, I started to question whether or not it could be consistently +EV.
First off, the time charge at $6 per half hour is outrageous. You've got to overcome -6bb/hr just to break even. In addition, you can't limp in for $2. Minimum to bring in is $4. The problem with this is you get a sizeable pot (as a percentage of your stack) preflop with just a few limpers. So you need to risk a big percentage of your stack ($100 max buy in) just to take a stab at the pot. You may have TPTK, but you get pot committed so quickly you can't get away from your hand if an opponent made two pair or a set. Basically it struck me that there was a ton of luck to get your stack to $200-300 at which point you could start playing real NL poker. Anyone have a different experience than me or an explanation for why this game is beatable? |

this isn't much of an answer, but the foxwoods NL 1/2 100 max has a $5/half hour time charge - what's common?
i'd guess that with the requirement that you open for 4 your standards for limping hands should go up significantly. and yes, that's a stupid structure. |

Your logic is exactly why I don't play 1-1-2 NL at Lucky Chances on a regular basis (maybe once in 3 or 4 weeks). Imagine the horror everytime you limp with a small pair with a max stack of $100 only to have a crazy loose person in front raise to $16-$20 and be forced to muck them. I really hate that.
With the type of players (loose and passive) who play, I suppose it can be beatable, but as you mentioned, the structure truly does suck. Garland |
