A friend of mine is considering using the last couple of weeks of the summer to play poker at the Borgata. He asked me how much is a good win rate. I told him, Its not about the one day you play, u have to think about the big picture. And then he said, I know that but when should I leave the table. I told him he should leave the table when the texture of the table changes and they have wised up to the plays that he makes or if he is real tired. He told me he already knows that too. But he told me, and I believe him, I could sit there and play poker all night long and never leave. So he basically wants me to give him some type of structure even though he knows he shouldnt be lookin at some magic number to aim for.
So considering how many hands per hour you could receive at a casino how many BB would you need to consider it an average day? OK day? a great day? a phenomenal day? Thanks for the replies. |

I would try to look at it in terms of BB per 100 hands. Not BB per hours or day. How many BB I think would depend on his level of play, the other players at the tables level of play, and perhaps a few other varibles. I'm sure this isn't the rock solid answer you're looking but hopefully it can at least get you/him on the right track.

If he is that concerned with day to day results, I don't knwo if he will be all that succesful. If you want to give him an answer give him the old 1BB/hour number, if thats what hes looking for.

The other night he called me at 11:30 to tell me he made it the casino. He called me again at 1:30/2:00 to tell me he was up 75BB. He always goes up kinda high and then i think he gets bored. and starts to make silly calls. So Ill reword my question. Given that you can only play 1 table and you can generally only get about x hands per hour, 5 BB per hour is average? 10 BB per hour?
Also is 75BB in about 2 hours great? Extraordinary? Leave for home around that mark? If you had to pick a number, would it be something like that? Maybe something more realistic like 20 BB an hour? |

The magic numbers of poker are dumb. Setting goals to reach and leave can often be losing poker. They game maybe very profitable yet one has to leave because he hit his goal. And contrary to that, the game may be too tough yet one sits there because he hasn't hit his goal yet. Either way the player loses money.

AGAIN, it should be measured in hands played not by the hour. Hourly rates at a B&M mean little because the pace of the game can change dramaticly from hand to hand, player to player. One hour you could play 40 some hands and only 25 the next hour. In a game possibly that slow he could sit their for 2-3 hours and never see a hand worth playing.
If he has some big hard on for an hourly rate tell him to find out how long it takes to play 100 hands at that B&M, keep track of winnings (write down +/- after every 100 hands), and do the math. Example: 2.5 hours to play 100 hands winning 4BB per 100 hands equals 1.6BB per hour. (4/2.5=1.6) I think 1-3BB per hour by this means would be an good win rate. |

I think poster is not looking at these numbers realistically. Anyone can have a great night and start telling people that they made 25/75/150/ BB per hour. He needs to know that BB/hour is a long-term look at your profitability, not "what I made in two hours". Of course, if he had a bad night, would he report how much he "lost" per hour?
