Default I don\'t understand the abbreviation

I said before that I am a converting craps player who is learning hold'em. I found a hold'em tourny that say $10.00 buy-in RB/AO. I know that RB is rebuy but what is meant by AO?

I hate to say it but I'm still not sure what you mean. Rebuy is when you can repurchase chips when your out. Are you saying that even if your doing well you can buy more chips? Is this a common event at live tournaments?

in some tournaments, yes. You can add extra chips onto your stack for a fee and depending on the structure, you have to decide whether it's +EV to add on.

while we're doing abbrevs., anyone tell me what "vig" literally means? I know it's the money that goes to the house in a tournament (10+1 = $1 vig), but is it an abbreviation, or a real word, or what?

this one intrigued me last night as my little brother watched me play and said

"whats coldcalling"
"whats the vig"
"whats a flop"
"what am i doing here"
"2-7 - all in!"

and so on.

Regards,
Pete Harris

I do know that vig is short for vigorish. You have it right it's the percentage that goes to the house or holder of the bet.

Poker talk couldn't be clearer:

Sitting at a must-move game with maniacs, I'd straddled under the gun with cowboys, and it came back to me capped four ways. The big blind checked in the dark, and as I'd flopped the nuts on an action board, I popped it, got called in two places and got check-raised by the blind. I smooth-called with evil intents for the turn. 4th street put a three-flush out to share, the blind led out and I looked left to find the cutoff stacking a raise. The button folded, I called the three-bet and the table called the cap. The river filled me up, and I raised to find the nutflush and an underboat were willing to go 4 each.

Great post Bison!
Vig not only refers to poker but is also used to describe any interest taken on money by a lender (generally a referring to a very high rate and a less than reputable source)
Example, Vinny Crowbars lent me ten large but the vig is $500 a week.

Rebuy is when you can repurchase chips when your out.

Not just when you're out. Many tournaments allow you to rebuy when your chips are less than or equal to the amount of starting chips you get with your original buy-in. (Example: at 'Stars, you get 1500 to start and can rebuy at 1500 or less, thus you can rebuy before the first hand)

An "add-on" is the option to purchase a set number of additional chips at the end of the rebuy period. usually, anyone can take the add-on, regardless of their chip count.

this reminds me of something funny. my girlfriend likes to tease me and give me a hard time, and the other day I was reading about BJ and she looks over my shoulder for a little while and says something like "hey Josh, don't bust too fast when you're hard 17"
