Re: When do you have to show your cards?
[ QUOTE ]
it was weird in austria. you didn't have to show a hand for the pot to be awarded to you. for instance, if someone bluffed on the river and you called, he could muck without showing, and you could then also muck, yet win the pot, and nobody saw anything. [/ QUOTE ] Is that different from what would happen in the US? If player A bluffs at a pot on the river and while player B calls the bet, player A tosses his cards into the muck. Would player B have to show his hand or could he muck his cards as well. It really makes no difference because player B will win the pot, regardless of his cards. (I don't play at casino's so I'm really ignorant of casino rules, so this is a real question not a dumbassed sarcastic remark) |

Re: When do you have to show your cards?
Show one, show all. So the dealer should have done his best to fish Player A's cards out of the muck and show them.
Technically, if someone asked, Player's Bs cards should have been shown. Most good dealers don't allow cards to be thrown directly into the muck, but kind of intercept them. |

Re: When do you have to show your cards?
What you describe happens all the time. But if someone speaks up, they can see the hand. I guess what he is saying is in Austria, there isn't an option to see the cards.

Re: When do you have to show your cards?
If someone flashed me his cards like that, I'd probably bet into him even if he had me beat. Of course, it probably wouldn't work unless you reacted immediately.

Re: When do you have to show your cards?
I play at both casinos as well, I may have been at the table where this hand was played.
What you DON'T want to do, is put somebody in a position where they're having a bluff or terrible play revealed in a humiliating way. It should be a funny or playful scenario. This happens to me at least once a session: Mullet bettor: "Do you have a flush?" Me, big smile: "The first question to answer is, do YOU have a flush?" Usually, he'll just show and we'll both laugh about it. If there's more resistance to showing, simply say, "I called your bet." That eliminates any question about it, and the dealer wakes up if he hasn't already. Note that this also applies if you call his turn bet and the river is checked around. It's hard to stress enough how important it is not to humiliate the guy. At Harrah's and Trump, the guys who river bluff a lot are usually the biggest producers at the table, but they leave pretty quick if they feel bad. If I catch a bluff, I always say something like, "You almost scared me off that one!" or "You've got to take a shot like that once in a while." You may even want to let folks slide once in a while and muck their cards if they're obviously bad players, since odds are (in Chicago) their first mistake was made preflop and there won't be that much to learn. Worry about tricky plays from good players and insist on seeing their cards, but there are few of those. |

Re: When do you have to show your cards?

I'm happy you didn't take that the wrong way. [/ QUOTE ] Not at all. You were completely right and I sincerely thank you for being so harsh. If you weren't it probably wouldn't even have registered that I did imply that it would be OK in my first post. I certainly shouldn't have and honestly didn't mean to. |
