I am building my own poker table. Any ideas on what to use for the playing surface? What's the best? Velveteen, speed cloth, quilter's fannel, or willi-cloth?

Depends on what you mean by best. There are tradeoffs to everything... the 3 main characteristics are price, durability, and authenticity. How important each one is will affect what is best for you.

Wool felt will be the most authentic playing surface (most like real poker tables in casinos), however it's kinda pricey and not super durable (it'll last plenty long, but it requires some upkeep because it tends to pill). This is what I have on my poker table, and I'm very happy with it.

Speed cloth is much more durable than wool felt, but just as expensive, and doesn't feel like a real poker table.

Velveteen is cheap, fairly durable, but lacks authenticity.

etc...

Personally, I went with wool felt because the price wasn't out of my budget, and I really wanted the authentic look and feel.

I have had a lot of success with faux suede. I found it in the bargin rack at Joann Fabrics and it is an excellent playing surface. The cards slide easily, and it cleans quickly with a lint roller.

Same here, casinosupply.com. 8' (a foot more than my table length, just in case) was like 68 bucks. More than I would have liked to spend, but far from ridiculous. Heck, the headliner from Joann Fabrics I put under it cost me $30.

I also got the perfect padded rail from casino supply.. both were shipped really quickly, no hassle for delivery to my workplace.

You should use a better browser, or install a plug-in to block popups. Personally, I use FireFox, and I can just turn off popups. The browser simply ignores the command to spawn a new window. It's awesome.

The google toolbar does this too, if you're stuck on IE, though I don't have any information on how reliable it is.

But yeah... I hate it when you go to a site and get a ton of popups... just smacks of underhanded business people.

I manage this site and there are no pop-ups associated with any page on this site. If anyone who did click through the link experienced pop up ads I request that you please PM me with any details you can remember concerning the pop up.

I can attest to Google Toolbar, it blocks all popup I've seen (It has other cool features like Autofill too).

BTW,Windows XP SP2 has popup blocker built-in to the new IE. It also blocks harmful code and automatic downloads.
