Any thoughts on the Golden Nugget?

I may be going to Vegas in mid August, and am considering my hotel options. If I stay anywhere decent on the strip, it's going to run from about $125/night (Monte Carlo) to about $152/night (Bellagio) avg. I was thinking about saving some money and staying at either the Orleans or the Golden Nugget (I will have a rental car, and some friends going will be staying at a strip hotel without a poker room, so not so worried about location). I have played in the poker room at the Orleans quite a bit, so I know what to expect there. Anyone have any info on the Golden Nugget's poker room? Thanks in advance.

Just wanted to let you know that I stayed at the Orleans once, and their rooms are MUCH nicer than I was expecting before I opened the door.

Doesn't anyone have any info on the Nugget's Poker room?

I've played there twice so I'm no authority. However as far as I can remember there are 20 tables about 60% of which are low limit 2/4-4/8 holdem and omaha, some 1-5 stud is there as well. The other tables include 10/20-40/80 holdem, and a 2/5 blind NL holdem cash game. I know there were a few higher limit tables but I don't know the details on those. The room is quite open and sits on what used to be part of the outdoor pool patio. My biggest complaint would be the amount of time I had to wait to get into a game, but that seems pandemic in Vegas right now.

My girlfriend and I stayed at the Golden Nugget over July 4th weekend...(see my post regarding this in this same heading)

You should probably take my comments with a grain of salt, as we're used to staying at the Bellagios, Mandaly Bays, Palms type of casinos...while The Golden Nugget had its charms - nice casino, decent though expensive restaurants, okay pool - we didn't like it. The rooms were one step up from a Howard Johnsons, the bed sheets grey and stained and scratchy, the bathroom adequate. And to be honest, we didn't like the class of people on Fremont. Yes, color us SNOBS. [img]/images/graemlins/tongue.gif[/img] As for the poker room, it was a joke. Never more than three or four tables running, inexperienced dealers, a boring room. Nothing at all to recommend it.

After a couple nights, we had had enough and moved to the strip.

Now, if you're looking for a great deal at a pretty decent place, I think the Nugget is good for that...it beats the other downtown casinos by a mile.

i only played there one night and it was a sunday around midnight sooooo...

there were about three 2/4 games and two 4/8 games (holdem) and i think one 1-5 stud game...very soft games with lots of old people

the room is nice enough, but some of the dealers seemed new, but they were friendly

also, i saw a guy that looked like clarkmeister, but he said his name was Dave Watkins from Texas when i asked him...too bad for the real Clark cuz i woulda bought him a beer, oh well...

You can use Priceline to try to get something cheaper on the strip. You can easily beat $125 a night. The Venetian is the only 5* strip property on priceline so you can lowball that without getting screwed, usually between $79-99. 4* strip hotels are currently MGM, Mirage, Bally's, TI, Westin Casuarina, Aladdin, and NY NY. You can lowball those without much risk, $50 has hit before.
