i thought a long time about folding the river but decided something like A8 was just too likely. advice?

avoiding this problem would be a good thing but raising preflop in MP1 might create other problems that are worse.

agree with the PF raise post...
also maybe think about overbetting the flop.
1. you're probably not going to improve and may have to fold if an A K Q hit, not to mention the straight draw.
2. taking down the smallish pot might not be the worst thing ever here.
3. if you're called and have to see the turn...if scary undercards continue to hit the turn and river, you may be more prone to stay in (and lose a huge pot) while if AQK come up you can fold easily. if cards come that don't help your opponent and leave you with overpair still, he probably won't be calling your bets with anything other than a big hidden hand.

of course, a PF raise would help you avoid all of this.

Thats no excuse. You have to raise this. If all unders fall, great, bet that baby out. If an A or K hits, bet that flop, they probably put you on AK or something and you'll take the pot quite often. JJ is a good hand, don't underestimate it.

I hover between raising and limping with JJ in MP depending on the texture of the table. I think you played it well enough, there weren't that many draws (unfortunately he had one of them) so value betting rather than checking the river is a better play because it is far more likely that he has a made hand. I'm not sure about calling the all in though, I can't see a standard player doing that with anything you beat to make that call profitable.

I agree with climbrock, not raising JJ in MP because you might get reraised is worthless. That's like saying you shouldn't raise premium hands because what if they don't hit on the flop. But we still do it anyway...JJ isn't a hand where you wish you had position compared to other hands like AKs, I think it's pretty cut and dry, the flop comes under - woo hoo, the flop comes over - you take a stab at the pot and if you are called you are done from there...

JJ is a schizophrenic hand, in the sense that it's strong enough to raise preflop when you are first in or in mid position, but you are really just hoping to take the pot down preflop. Once the flop hits, it plays like a low pocket pair essentially....
