Re: Medium overpair against preflop 3-bet
I think you can go for a check-raise here, as button will probably auto-bet if checked to. If it's bet before you, go ahead and raise. He probably won't three-bet AK or AQ here, so if he does you can put him on an overpair and fold the turn unimproved.
Just my 2 cents, I might be wrong. NT |

Re: Medium overpair against preflop 3-bet
With the pot being the size it is trapping opponents for more bets with a checkraise shouldn't be the first priority. Trying to clear the field should. The problem is the pot is so big that any hands with overcards to your 9's are still making a profitable call if you bet when checked to and raised by the button. That is the line I'm gonna take on the flop though if I get checked to. The raise if bet into sounds right though.

I have trouble playing this type of situation as well. --Rico |

Re: Medium overpair against preflop 3-bet
Allan,
A flop CR here isn't to trap people for bets. It's more to take control of the hand and try to make the button [incorrectly] fold his overcards on the flop or turn. However, I like the idea of betting into him here. He'll probably pop it with a hand like AK or AQ and will give you a chance to 3 bet him. If he caps it I'd fold the turn unimproved. |

Re: Medium overpair against preflop 3-bet
If you are gonna checkraise I imagine close to everyone who called preflop is gonna call a single bet before you complete your checkraise raise, they are also going to call the checkraise. So trapping people for more bets is a byproduct of that line. It's counterproductive to what we need to do here, because the real idea is to get as many folds on the flop as we can.

Like I said, I like leading out here. If it's HU I'm checkraising though.

Re: Medium overpair against preflop 3-bet
The later streets always leave me wondering how to play these spots as well. Obviously we're hoping our opponent is raising with overcards. But as to how to play the later streets I am usually just calling down.

How it actually went down
I bet out, the button raised, UTG called, I 3-bet, both call.
Turn: 5[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] I bet, both call. River: 4[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] I bet, both call. Button has AJo, UTG has 33. I win |
