Gomez this is why you want to play big pots.
Ultimate Bet No-Limit Hold'em, $.25 BB (9 handed)
Button ($15.55) SB ($7.40) Hero ($15) UTG ($16.90) UTG+1 ($24.75) MP1 ($7.15) MP2 ($26.80) MP3 ($27.90) CO ($8.10) Preflop: Hero is BB with T[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img], J[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]. UTG folds, UTG+1 folds, MP1 folds, MP2 folds, MP3 folds, CO folds, Button calls $0.25, SB completes, Hero checks. Flop: ($0.75) J[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img], 3[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img], 4[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] (3 players) SB checks, Hero checks, Button bets $0.75, SB folds, Hero calls $0.75. Turn: ($2.25) A[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] (2 players) Hero checks, Button bets $2.25, Hero calls $2.25. River: ($6.75) K[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] (2 players) Hero bets $6.75, Button calls $6.75. Final Pot: $20.25 Results below: Button shows 7h Kc (one pair, kings). Hero shows Tc Jc (flush, ace high). Outcome: Hero wins $20.25. he'll try to win a $20 pot with K7, the guy in your AQ hand was probably willing to play a $15-$20 pot with Ax. |

Re: Gomez this is why you want to play big pots.
i've decided that the decreased variance i experience by buying in for $15 is worth the decreased EV i get by not covering everyone worse than me.
also, having a smaller (15-35 as opposed to 25-45) stack means that i can make "callable" preflop raises with AA/KK (1.25-1.75) and not give people odds to flop a set and stack me when i commit on the flop, as i will generally do. if i have $35 on the table, i have to raise at least $3.5 or so to make it a big mistake to call my AA with 33 etc, and that will stop people from calling with AJ etc and i sure dont want that. also, i suspect that a smaller stack is less intimidating to the fish. and if thats true that's VERY important, much more so than coverine people over whom i have a marginal edge, if any. $15 is usually enough to cover just about all the fish anyway. |

Re: Gomez this is why you want to play big pots.
(i guess that whole 10% thing assumes that if someone spikes a set on me, i'll go all the way with my overpair. since this isnt necessarily the case maybe that number is a little high, but still if i'm betting 10% of my stack calling with a smaller pair is automatically bad, and thats what i want.)

Sklanky has written about the advantage of being all-in. Obviously if your stack is small, you're likely to get all-in.

Re: Gomez this is why you want to play big pots.
Why not cover all of the worse players? I would much rather come in with a stack at least as high as the highest at the table. I hate/love playing against short stacks. One you can take them down pretty easy, however on the other hand, if they tend to move in a lot because they are short, your starting hand requirements go up.
I have played the $25 NLHE tables at UB and the players are horrible (most) and it was very frustrating losing to someone drawing to there 10 to 1 long shot. Buy in for the max! |

Re: Gomez this is why you want to play big pots.
i dont know man, when i buy in for 15 i usually cover around 7 or 8 of the players. and i'm making 13.5 BB/100 x 3 tables buying in for 15, i figure it's working for me.
