Default Where do I go from here?

As someone who has progressed the way of your average poker player: books, software, very modest home games, informative forums such as this one , low limit games in Casinos, I wondered what the next step in my poker education should be to make me the consistent winner that we all strive to be.

A friend of mine taught me poker, gave me some of his books to read, and often made lessons out of our weekly home games. This was a great start for me. He was good, but no genius, and I was quickly able to get up to his level.

I wish I knew someone who was a great player so that I could learn from him.

I saw the Poker School Online thing and that kind of intrigued me. Has anyone tried that? Does it help in any way. Does it compare at all with having a real live tutor to mentor you as your game progresses.

Any thoughts on this would help.

I never tried PSO, but I've heard mixed reviews of it. You can probably find a bunch of opinions on it by searching the archives.

The best way to get better at poker is to keep playing. Start with a bankroll that you would not be terribly upset to see disappear. Divide that number by 300. That is the "Big Bet" level you should be starting at. (Ex: if you answered $300, you should start at $0.50/$1 tables, if you said $100, you should start at $0.10/$0.25 or $0.25/$0.50). Get an account at one of the various online sites, and get playing. If you start winning, move up as your bankroll allows. If you bust out, try again when you have another bankroll to invest. (If you don't like the online game, you will need a bigger bankroll, as live games start at about $2/$4, depending on where you play).

Use this forum. Post hands in the Micro- or Small-Stakes forums for feedback. Keep playing. Give your feedback on other people's hands to get feedback on your feedback... Just make sure your posts have some strategy or probability aspect (don't post bad beat stories or brag posts).

Reread those books (assuming they're good ones, that is). Keep playing. Read and post on the forums. Play some more.

Good luck.

i dont play live yet but ive played online for over a year now.(ill be taking the plunge to play live in another 2 or 3 months). Ive heard from alot of people that if you can beat 3/6 online then you should be able to beat 10/20 live. It took me 6 months to get my roll ready for 3/6 and ive been winning consistantly at that level for about 3 months. If i can beat it for another 2-3 months ill feel ready to tackle higher stakes live during the weekends and just play online during the week after work.

Really?
I've been playing live for about 2 years, but never played online so I wouldn't know how to compare them.

I always figured that it was the other way around.
Aren't online games easier to beat.

I've played 10-20 live, but only twice. I usually play 5-10. I found a lot of tough players in that 10-20 live game.

In general (by hands, not hours), no. I've played in live 5/10 games that were looser than most online .5/1 tables I play.

Memorize part 1 (first 2 card section) Reread it.Think about what yuo read.If yuo planning to play Holdem. This is yuor Bible. This book should be with yuo every time yuo goto the john. By the time yuo reread it 10 times, it will start to soak in. More is said in 1 paragraph,Than th average person learns. Then try The Psycoligy of poker and Caro's book of tells. Then reread HEPfAP. Use the poker programs, dont just play the game.Run simulations, Build a poker profile. Then see how it performs on different type of tables, (loose, Aggrosive,Tight, Short). All of this should keep yuo busy for a year at least. Download Online poker site Then oBserve. Not Play. When yuo start figuring out who going to lay down, what. Yuo start playing. Just read some of your other posts. Don't take this the wrong way, just trying to help. It's "you" not "yuo".

You must venture into online poker if you have not tried it yet. As mentioned by another poster, although comparable limits are tougher to beat, as a whole it is easier to win online. The reason is that online poker proceeds much quicker than casino poker, 2 to 3 times as fast. Furthermore, you can play multiple tables; either 2 or 3 work great for me. There is no tipping, no travel time, much shorter waiting lists, and a huge variety of games and limits.
