Tournaments vs. Ring Games
Don't quite know how to ask this but is it possible to be a reasonably good tournament player but yet a average ring game player. In SnG's and MTT's I seem to do well. Finish in the money enough to have a profitable return. Nothing great but at least a few hundred on a consistent basis.
When I play in ring games, usually multi tabling, I seem to either win a small amount or break even. Always thought this was supposed to be the other way around. Is anyone having similiar experiences? |

Absolutely. 2 different sets of skills. As an aside, it's said that ring game players love to see TJ Cloutier sit down in their game. I've heard he's considered a fish. |

[/ QUOTE ] i'm a better SNG and MTT player, also. my success in these far outweigh my results in ring games. i really admire successful ring/cash game specialists whether they play $2/$4 or $300/$600 and would love to become one in the future. i feel these type players make more on a consistent basis than tourney players and i'm all about 'CONSISTENCY'. |

Re: Tournaments vs. Ring Games
I'm much better at MTT's. In the last week, I've won $1600 at MTT's and lost $450 at ring games. And it always seems that way to me. I've now stopped playing ring games again.

Re: Tournaments vs. Ring Games
To put in my 2 cents worth (someone give me my change), I do feel obligated to point out this:
While MTT's and SnG's DO require an entirely different set of skills/mindset from a regualr fixed-limits ring game, they share a LOT in common with NL Hold'Em. For those of you who are good at Tourney but haven't tried NL yet, you owe yourself a huge favor to try it aggressively; I would find it very difficult to imagine your results to be dissapointing. |

variance is high for cash game specialists too
cards run hot and cold in cash games too
Consistency can only be had in the long run when you play to your strengths be it cash or tourney. Cash players must put up with more tag teams... (or perhaps the only consistent cash game specialists are the "team" players). |

i'm all about 'CONSISTENCY' [/ QUOTE ] Keep pushing those 9's. I try to play low limit ring games, but i find them depressingly mundane, and it gets hard to concentrate, tilt comes easy, SNGs and MTT rarely have this effect on me. Regards ML |

Re: Tournaments vs. Ring Games
If you're multitabling in ring games but not in tourneys, your play won't be at the same level in the ring games. While many people on this forum can play good enough to make money while multitabling, most will concede that they play better poker if they're only doing one table at a time. Of course, making $10/hr. at 2 tables is better than making $15/hr. at one so this is totally fine for them. I'd say try playing ring games one table at a time and see if you're still not making money.

Re: Tournaments vs. Ring Games
All the people who posted are right. Two different sets of skills. Our local pro, Louis Asmo, has a great answer to that question. He actually won't play ring games when preparing for a tournament. Good interview with him here on Poker Pages where he discusses that very topic.
