Default Who Bets The River?

1/2 at Paradise:

I'm in the BB with A [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] 6 [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]

Folded to the button who limps, I check.

Flop: Q [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] 3 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] 2 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]

I check, he bets, I raise, he calls.

Turn: 3 [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]

I bet, he pauses and calls.

River: 7 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]

Who bets? Results and my opinion of how I played this later.

I bet the flop.
I dont think check-raising a guy who openlimps on the button can be good...

Kurn,

This may sound a little strange but I would take you line if I were at Foxwoods and would bet the flop if it were online.

Peace,
Joe Tall

Ugh.

Why not just check/fold on the flop? You have a player, not aggressive enough to raise from the button with no one else in the pot, betting the flop. The pot is small, he has position on you, I let it go.

I guess you have to bet, the only draw got there and hope he folds.

Default RESULTS

My basic logic was unless he's trapping with a big pair, I doubt he limped with any playable Q, and I can't think he limped with anything that has a 3 or a 2. When the 7 comes on the river, I can't logically put him on that either.

So I bet. Again he thinks and finally calls, showing A [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] 9 [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] to take down the pot.

My reasning was correct, but in retrospect I think my play was wrong for that reasoning. Better I check-call the flop and check-raise the turn.

Thoughts?

I would bet.

You cannot win the pot by checking.

Not trying to be rude, but what's with the pissing contest? Check-fold, next hand.

Sounds like a good way to bleed off chips while trying to steal a tiny pot

I forgot to say, find another table or get down to Foxwoods to play some 20/40, it's a much looser game than this one seems to be.

Peace,

There are almost no draws that he could have that would (correctly or almost-correctly) call a bet on the turn but would not call on the river. 54 would be one exception but I don't think it's very likely that he's going to play that hand.

So it looks like he's going to call you down, most likely with a weakly-played Qx, a (probably better) ace-high. I think your highest EV play, honestly, is to check the river and plan on folding to a bet - it is obvious that this opponent is not very aggressive so I don't think you need to worry too much about his betting with a worse hand.

There's an argument for betting (and I certainly like betting better than check-calling), but it has mostly to do with creating an image for future hands. And I don't know that it helps that much to have a loose, bluffy image against a passive-playing calling station.
