Online tourneys show mean instead of ave chip count?
wouldn't a more useful statistic than the average chip count be the mean? a few gigantic stacks throws off the average chip count so fast that i never find it useful. oh well, something to think about.

Re: Online tourneys show mean instead of ave chip count?
The average and the mean are the same thing, so I'll assume you meant to say median instead of mean.
If there's room, it couldn't hurt to show both, but the mean dows have some usefulness. For example in quickly figuring out what the average stack is going to be around the bubble in a satellite tournament so you can get a target stack in mind for when to switch gears and get more conservative. Most sites I've played at provide you're ranking in the tournament which i think gets at the same information you're wanting to see the median for, but (at least in my opinion) seems more useful. I'd rather know that I'm 49th out of 65 than know that the median stack is 5,000 and my stack is 3,200. But the more information available, the better. |

Re: Online tourneys show mean instead of ave chip count?
I have never noticed that any of them do anything other than divide the total chips in play by the number of players remaining, i.e. the mean, or average (same thing). Any large or small stacks are irrelevant to the result. This result may not be reflective of the true distribution of the chips, but that is usually all they provide.

I believe the median would be fairly useless as a stat.
Knowing your ranking IS a very useful bit o' info, and being able to relate that to the "average" stack is also very useful, as you stated quite well. al |
