It means you have two pair with Aces being your highest pair. This is mostly a stud and draw term, you don't hear it used much in Holdem.

Aces "over" would be a Full house, AAAxx

XX "over" YY is most commonly 2 pair, not a full house; XX "full of" YY is a full house

I've never heard "XX over YY" as 2 pair. I've heard full house as "XX full of YY" or "XX over YY" and I've heard 2 pair as "XXs up" or "XX and YY"

You hear it a lot more in stud, where "XXX up" is pretty common at a showdown. Only when a distinction needs to be made will "K's over XXX".

I think its used quite frequently in hold em. Why wouldn't it be? I say it sometimes.

Never thought about it, but I don't hear it much, if at all, at the hold 'em table. People will generally just say "two pair."

Anyone know the derivation of the term?

Although this is the usage I'm used to, I think I have seen "over" used in the chat box (automated dealer text) at the Gaming Club to descripe 2 pr. Is TGC just dumb?

I think the reason is that in stud it is very rare that two people have the same top pair, so the second pair or kicker doesn't matter. If you say "Aces up" it almost never matters what you second pair is.

In holdem it often matters a lot what your kicker or 2nd pair is so saying "Aces up" doesn't convey enough info about your hand.
