Another 10-20 NLHE hand
KQs in the cut-off. Two limpers to you, you make it 100 to go. One caller, directly to your right. He's weak, prone to making some bad calls, and also throwing out an occasional bluff. Just weak. He has about $1500 -- you have him covered.
Flop comes Q 9 9, $230 in the pot. He checks to you, you bet 120, he thinks and calls. Turn is a 6. No flushes possible. He checks, you bet 200, he calls. Pot is now $870. River is a J. He does a "fake-bet" check. You bet $200. He immediately says "Make it 800." Pot is now $1870, $600 to you. He has about $500 left. What do you do? |

Re: Another 10-20 NLHE hand
how come you didn't check the river? the checkraise is a very odd play, I honestly wouldn't know what to think.

Re: Another 10-20 NLHE hand
I would have not raised preflop, bet the flop, and checked the turn. Had I raised preflop and bet the flop and turn, I'd check the river. Opponent would have to be a pushover or completely open for me to stick my neck out that far with that hand.
As played I'd bullet fold. He wins for being aggressive. You will lose a truckload of money on average calling there. Matt |

Re: Another 10-20 NLHE hand
i like the pre-flop raise but i only make it $60. i bet the pot on the flop. check the turn and call the river...next.
this is how i would play if it was my 1st hand at the table knowing nothing else, how long had you been at this table? |

I agree. You ought to be toast here most times you call. More importantly, you didn't have to get yourself into this spot in the first place.

Results and Additional Information
One thing I probably should have added was that this player had called a pot-sized bluff on the river I had made on a board of AQT75 with A6 offsuit, when I had JJ. He didn't do this on a tell, he did this because he was a weak player.
I agonized, agonized some more, but just couldn't see how I could be beat here. I finally decided to call, he said, "Nice call", and flipped over AJ for the paired Jack on the river. I scooped a nice pot. I understand all the comments here, but just feel that with a weak player who is in a NL game not because he usually makes money but rather seems like he wants to play in the "top-section" with the big boys this is an acceptable call. Against a strong player I'd have to play this hand completely differently, and keep the pot much smaller. <shrug> It's so hard to correctly analyze a live big-bet hand on the internet, but there's a good chance you guys are right here and I just "got lucky." |

How about the bet? Do you think the bet on river is acceptable?

River bet
Tewall,
I think the river bet is not only good, it is crucial. Remember the fake-bet check. This implies to me that he has something decent, but wants me to check behind me. No one is tricky enough to try to INDUCE a check, causing you to actually BET so that they can RAISE -- at least, not a tourist in Vegas who is an otherwise weak player. I have to value bet here to get some more money out of him. With any pocket pair, even 22, 33, etc., this guy will call here if he had gone this far. JT is the only hand he could conceiveably have that he would now FOLD. Once I bet the 200 again, he decided, "I'll put this guy to a decision and check-raise." But I think not betting the river in this situation is a huge mistake. |

Re: River bet
I guess I already know the answer to this question, but what would you have done if he pushed?
How often do you think he shows you QJ here? KT? 9 with bad kicker? I've never played in a live game that big, but I've played in live casino games with weak players, and I wouldn't have been surprised to see any of those hands there. Then again, I think I probably check behind on the river too much. If you think checking behind is a mistake, how big of a mistake do you think it is? scrub |
