you played it fine.
rivers happen. you made money off of him preflop, on the flop and turn. no reason to raise him since he's charging himself to draw. and as long as he'd doing that, you dont want him to fold to a raise. sometimes ill play it this way, sometimes ill bet out on the flop. the trick is to know your opponent. how he'd push a hand and if he'd fold anytime. mainly he has to be the type to bet the whole way 'behind' your checks. many will take a free card on the turn. but if he bets the turn, his range of hands is still wide. and if he has an overpair, it will likely cost you 2 extra bets to see it. if he checks behind on the turn, it's usually a neon sign as to what he has. nothing. b |

I misread this originally and didn't realize it was headsup. I agree with what everybody's saying. Though I haven't read it anywhere, when I have a high pair I tend to check call for the reasons stated. They're not going to call a bet with an inferior hand, but they may bet an inferior hand if you check.
