that's pretty much the case. I'm sure there are some people are still grinding out there, but I think there are just SOOO many better ways to make money nowadays, especially online.

Rules really don't matter that much, even a bad rule game can be beat, if they deal deep enough into the shoe.
Penetration is the key. The deeper the casino deals the more hands the casino gets in per hour. The more time spent shuffling, the less hands per hour to take money from the suckers. So the casino has a vested interest to deal deeply in the shoe to keep grinding away at the non-counters, instead of letting them sit back, with their money in their pockets, watching the dealer shuffle. The continious shuffler machine would kill this, but the "online is rigged" crowd shys away from the machines and they have not caught on, plus the casino was eating a lot of expense in the machines. Using shuffler machines, where decks are switched in and out, has certainly hurt but there is still down time associated with this operation.

It's all about shuffle point. If you can find a casino that still deals deep into the shue, it can still be profitable to count - as long as you can keep an accurate count all the way and know what to do with the information!
But with "continuous shuffle" shues, it is truly impossible to gain an edge by counting.

I remember the biggest key in the small bit of "Gambling for a living" by 2+2 was appearing to be a tourist who was not counting, as any hint of counting would cause the house to reshuffle the deck or your ejection from the game.

I always like to drop a loud comment about how "those machines are rigged" when ever I pass one at a table in a casino within ear shot of anybody sitting and playing at one. Even one less customer is one step closer to the casino getting rid of the contraptions.
