Default Who saw that $2,000-$4,000 game at the Borgata this weekend? (long)

So I'm playing some $6-12 HE at the Borgata Saturday night. My fiancé comes down around 8 and tells me it's time for dinner. We head to eat with my best friend (Joe) and his girlfriend. Then onto the Borgata's nite club (the Mixx). A really nice night. But it's only just begun.

My fiancé is a little tipsy, thus brave, and feels she's ready to give Casino poker a try for the first time. Naturally I'm excited at the notion and lead the way to the poker room. The two of us and Joe sit down at a fairly soft $3-6 table.

The buzz at the table was about the BIG $2,000-4,000 game over in the high stakes area. I take a walk over there and who do I see but Johnny Chan and Doyle Brunson just chillin' there like it ain't no thing. At this point they were playing with a couple of young guys who I didn't recognize. At another table I saw who I believed to be Scotty Nguyen. I've never seen any big time poker players in person so I was pretty impressed.

When I went back my table I told them who was over there and the players said that was nothing. Annie Duke, Phil Ivey, Eric Seidel and a couple others I don't recall now, were over there earlier in the night. The guys at my table also told me Ben Affleck came down to play and asked "what are you guys playing?" and Johnny Chan responded, "Anything you want Ben". Then J. Lo came down to pull him away. Pretty wild.

But the best part of my night was watching my fiancé simply clean up at my table. She honestly has only played HE a handful of times at home but these guys couldn't believe it. I suppose from listening to me tell stories of hands, talk strategy and give her some pointers - mostly on preflop strategy and playing T/A, she apparently was able to glean some info. She did appear pretty timid (a lot of folding) and awkward when betting - she kept asking if she can raise and to how much. So one guy thought it'd be a good idea to take a shot at her.

He bet each round and she called him down all the way. On a board of K73KT he showed Q5 and her pocket 9s took it down. To me it really seemed like he was representing a king. So afterwards I asked her why didn't she fold at any point. She said, "I felt he was bluffing, especially when it was just me and him, so figured I'd just let him bet away." No muscling this girl out of pots. I couldn't help but laugh.

Then later on, she preflop 3-bet with her pocket 8s in an attempt to isolate the raiser to her right who she claims was "playing too much junk". Sure enough, she isolated him and won over his J9o. Not a bad read for a complete newbie.

At the end of the trip she managed a $80 win over a few hours and I took home $200 in 6 hours of play. Now she wants to read my books. It's funny how a little winning can get somebody hooked.

"My fiancé is a little tipsy, thus brave...."

This is always a good thing, especially after a night of dinner and clubbing.

"...and feels she's ready to give Casino poker a try for the first time."

Ha! What you should be thinking is "Major Bummer" not:

"Naturally I'm excited at the notion and lead the way to the poker room."

What a waste of a perfectly good "slightly tipsy and brave" woman.

"What are you getting at?"

That he squandered a perfectly good opportunity to take his girlfriend back to the room, wait until she passes out, so he could go back downstairs and play poker all night?
